Smithville Officers
Assist In Drug Arrests
Responding to a request
from Smithville Police Officer
Lamon Logue, officers with
the Sumter County Sheriff’s
Office stopped a vehicle two
miles from Smithville and
arrested the two occupants on
drug charges.
Smithville Police Chief Artie
Gardner had observed a drug
transaction being made by the
occupants of the car earlier
and notified Officer Logue.
The vehicle had traveled into
Sumter County and the Sumter
officials were notified by the
Smithville officer.
When the vehicle was
searched, digital scales, and
cocaine were found in the ve
hicle and a large sum of money
was found on the driver.

Leesburg Police Chief Charles
Moore reports that officers
worked several cases recently
including cases involving theft
by taking (gas drive-off), wanted
person, theft by taking and driv
ing while license suspended.
Chief Moore reports that
with the increase in the price of
gasoline, the number of incidents
involving gas drive-offs has
increased.
Corporal Robert S. Anglin
worked a gas drive-off August
29 at a business on Hwy 19
South. Ptl. Brian Price worked
a gas drive-off August 27 at a
business on Hwy 19 S. Ptl Price
worked a gas drive-off at the
same business on August 26.
Jonathan Gibson, of 619 North
Madison Street, Albany, was
arrested August 26 by Corpo
ral Henry J. Duncan for being
a wanted person. Corporal
Duncan was advised by dispatch
that Gibson was wanted out of
Camilla. The officer went to
Gibson’s place of employment
and advised the manger why
he was there. Gibson was ar
rested and transported to the Lee
County Jail.
Corporal Duncan worked a
theft by taking August 26. The
officer was told by the victim’s
mother that his bike, with chain
attached, was stolen from the
middle school. The value of he
bike was $275.
Kean Leslie Phillips, of
210 Frost Street, Albany, was
charged with driving while li
cense suspended or revoked and
safety restraint violation (5 years
of age and older) August 25 by
Corporal Duncan. While on pa
trol, the officer observed Phillips
driving with six small juveniles
in the rear seat without proper
seat restraints and made a traffic
stop. A license check revealed
that his license was revoked.
Major David Bullington
worked a theft by taking case
August 24 . A bike valued $75
was stolen from a residence in
the 100 block of Magnolia Street.
Luther James Berry, of Deer
Camp Lane, Preston, Georgia,
was arrested August 23 by Cor-

person. Corporal Duncan was
dispatched to Hwy 19 North
and the bypass in reference to
a vehicle accident. The officer
made contact with Berry the
drive. Berry advised that he
blew several tires while driving
southbound on Hwy 19 North
and was able to steer the vehicle
to the side of the road without
striking anyone or anything. A
check of Berry’s license revealed
that he was wanted out of Cobb
County, Georgia on a warrant
for probation violation.

Who wants to be a miuionaire?
Donna McGowan, of Lee County, matched all six numbers in the August 20 Lotto South drawing and
won the $14 million jackpot. Mrs. McGowan pre-selected the cash option and received $7,771,429
before taxes Friday, August 26. Mrs. McGowan and her husband, Steve, said that they plan to continue
working. They will use their winnings to build a new house and pay their debts. Pictured are Georgia

Regina Roberts, 44, of 121
First Road, Leesburg, was
charged with theft by taking
and possession of marijuana
less than an ounce August
25 by Cpl. Jeffery Fordham.
Roberts, an employee at a
store on Hwy 19 South, was
handed a purse by a customer.
Roberts then placed the purse
in a trash can and carried it
to the back of the store. A
witness to her actions recov
ered the purse and notified the
sheriff’s office. Cpl. Fordham
recovered the cash
that was taken
from the purse
from Roberts.
Cpl. Fordham
placed her under
arrest for theft
by taking. A check
of her pocketbook revealed
some marijuana residue, mari
juana seeds and two partially
smoked marijuana cigarettes.
She is also charged with pos
session of marijuana less than
an ounce.
John Oscar Moore, 51,
of 2196 Chaingang Road,
Dawson, was charged with
possession of cocaine, ob
struction of an officer and
failure to appear on a warrant
out of Dougherty County Au
gust 23 by Cpl. B. Browning.
Cpl. Browning responded to a
business in the 1200 block of
Hwy 82 West in reference to
a suspicious person who was
sleeping on a table outside the
business. Cpl. Browning spoke
to John Moore, the person
in question. Moore told the
officer that he was waiting
on his ride. When dispatch
advised the officer that Moore
was wanted on an outstanding
warrant, Moore had started
walking west in the parking
lot. The officer asked Moore
to come to the patrol car but
Moore started running. Cpl.
Browning had to wrestle
Moore to get him in custody.
After he was in custody, a
crack pipe was retrieved from
his clothes. He was transport
ed to the Lee County Jail on
the listed charges.
Anquan Terell Jones, 20, of
9402 B Putnam Blvd., Albany,
was charged with criminal
trespass August 23 by Sgt.
S.L. Shreaves. Sgt. Shreaves
responded to the 1500 block
of Hwy 19 South in reference
to a possible burglary in prog
ress. The officer was advised
by several witnesses that the
suspect was still in the apart
ment. The officer knocked on
the door and Anquan Jones
stepped outside and stated
“Go ahead and arrest me, I
broke in.’’ The officer recog
nized him from a call to
that location ear
lier. Jones was
\ charged with
j criminal tres-
f pass and was
transported to
the jail where
he was issued a magistrate
court summons to appear in
court September 27.
Margaret S. Spilman, 50, of
745 Johnson Street, Dawson,
and Cindy S. Barfield, 46, of
146 Palmer Road, Leesburg,
were charged with disor
derly conduct after they were
involved in a verbal and physi
cal altercation August 23 by
Dep. D.R. Eubanks at 146
Palmer Road, Leesburg. They
were issued Lee County Mag
istrate citations and released.
Tina Coleman McClure,
48, of 375 Creekside Drive,
Leesburg, was charged with
possession of Alprazolam,
Schedule IV controlled sub
stance by Sgt. E. Yearicks on
June 23. The incident location
was at Philema Road South
and Sportsman Club Road.
Tina McClure was ar
rested at 375 Creekside Drive
August 23 by Dep. T. Hormell
for possession of cocaine,
possession of marijuana less
than an ounce and outstand
ing warrant for possession of
controlled substance.
Lotravious D. Jones, 24,
of 1918 West Highland Ave.,
Albany, was charged with
criminal trespass August 22
by Cpl. Greg Wheeler. Cpl.
Wheeler was dispatched to an
apartment in the 1500 block
of Hwy 19 South in reference
to an unwanted guest. When
the officer arrived, he ob
served Jones standing in front
of the door acting as if he was
about to knock on the door.
He was asked by the officer to
come to him but Jones turned
and started running. After he
was caught, he was escorted
back to the apartment where
Jones was identified. The
victim told Jones to stay away
from her residence. Jones
was charged with criminal
trespass and transported to
the jail.
Goodin Named Lee
County Elementary
School Teacher of Year

Lee County Elementary
School proudly announces
our 2005 Teacher of the Year,
Mrs. Cathy Goodin. In her
28 years of teaching, she has
taught students in first through
fourth grade and is currently
teaching in third grade. She
earned her graduate degree
from Georgia Southwestern
University and started her
teaching career in Lee County
in 1987.
Cathy is married to Tim
Goodin and they are the proud
parents of three daughters;
Kristen, Jill and Jennifer and
one grandson, Buddy. They
are active members of Byne
Memorial Baptist Church.
When asked about her opin
ion of the teaching profession,
Mrs. Goodin said, “Teaching
young children is a rewarding
experience. All children can
learn. It is an honor to help
them be successful in their
lives.”
