Eating More (Breakfast, That
Is) To Help Manage Weight
The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, August 31, 2005, Page 5B
(NAPSI)-Do you ever skip
breakfast in an attempt to cut
calories and shed pounds?
You may be surprised
to learn that cut
ting those breakfast
calories may actually
hinder your attempts to
manage your weight.
When it comes to the
battle of the bulge,
breakfast can help tip
the scales in your favor.
When eating habits of peo
ple who maintained weight
loss of at least 30 pounds
for one year were analyzed,
most reported that they eat
breakfast almost every day.
It seems that breakfast eaters
are better able to maintain
their weight loss. In fact, one
large national study found that
people who regularly skipped
breakfast had the highest
body mass index (BMI), even
though they ate fewer calories
than the regular break
fast eaters. So how
does eating
breakfast help
people main
tain a healthier
weight? One
explanation lies in
our history. When humans
were hunter-gatherers and
food was not always available,
our bodies adapted to be able
to slow down calorie burning
What Is BMI?
BMI stands far body mass index. It is a

and store calories instead of
burning them for fuel.
C. Wayne Callaway, M.D.,
an endocrinologist in Wash
ington, D.C. explains that
without food, especially first
thing in the morning, the
body releases various hor
mones and chemical messen
gers that prepare for possible
starvation. “Then when you
eat a lunch or dinner, your
body’s chemical messengers
make you overeat so that your
body stores extra fat for the
next period of starva
tion,’’ Callaway
says. The mini
fast that occurs
when you
don’t eat over
night causes
the body to store
instead of utilize
energy. Only by eating some

Real Possibilities
For Change
When we start trying to
make signifi
cant changes
in our lives,
we find out
how stubborn
old habits
can be. They
are very dif
ficult to break. We need help.
Real help in breaking bad
habits comes from God. First,
you need to see those old
habits as sinful. They are not
only distasteful to you, they
are abhorrent to God. Second,
you need to turn to God and
ask forgiveness. Third, you
need to ask God for special
power to turn away from
those old habits. Fourth, you
must work on forming new
habits to replace the old ones.
In all of this, you must realize
that Christ gave His life for
Christians “that we should no
longer be slaves to sin’’ (Ro
mans 6:6). Christ breaks the
rule and reign of sinful bad
habits. Christ gives Christian
people inner strength. With
this new inner strength, bad
habits can be conquered and
new good habits formed. You
can therefore follow the Bible
when it says, “Just as you used
to offer the parts of your body
in slavery to impurity and
ever-increasing wickedness,
so now offer them in slavery
to righteousness and holi
ness’’ (Romans 6:19). Are you
really serious about forming
new habits in the next weeks
and months? Seek out Jesus
Christ. He breaks the power
of old habits. He led us into
new ones.

Q: Is it okay to have cereal

A: Cereal plus milk and

vitamins, minerals and fiber
and is quick and easy to make.

I+'s Me - Sod!
Upon your creation, I gave you dominion over
the earth and all its creatures. You were en
trusted with this stewardship in the hope that
you would use it wisely. At times, this has not
been the case.
When you neglect or abuse your fellow crea
tures, even if they have fur or scales or feath
ers, you are disobeying Me. It is your duty to
care for them and nurture them. Yes, they can
serve you in many ways. However, that does not
mean that they are less precious than you.
Remember that these are living, breathing,
sentient beings. If you treat them cruelly, I
will not look favorably upon you. I expect you
to be caring and sensitive. I expect you to
treat them well and be thankful for them. Live
up to this responsibility wisely and compassion
ately!

and ongoing process of sanctification, which is nurtured by the
Spirit energized Word of God.
The Holy Spirit implanted the Word within you at the time
of your salvation. It is the source of power and growth for your
new life in Christ. Your responsibility is to receive it in purity
and humility so it can do its sanctifying work.
“Humility” in James 1:21 could be translated “meekness,”
“gentleness,” or “having a willing spirit,” but I prefer “teach
ability.” If your heart is pure and humble, you will be teachable
and will set aside all resentment, anger, and pride so you can
learn God’s truth and apply it to your life.
When Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My com
mandments” (John 14:15), He was addressing this very issue. If
you love Him, you will desire to obey Him and will receive His
Word so you can know His will for your life. As you receive
the Word, the Holy Spirit empowers you to live according to its
principles.
Paul said, “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you,
with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another... and
whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord
Jesus” (Col. 3:16-17). That’s the essence of a Biblical lifestyle
and the fruit of receiving the Word in humility. May God bless
you with a teachable spirit and an ever-increasing love for His
truth?
