This week I am willingly
stranded so far away from my
two kids, cell phones don’t
even work here.
This is good, I think, but I’ll
really find out for sure when I
get home on Sunday with my
dirty camping gear and see if
anyone has survived.
Which they will, and I will
too.
I am at a women’s festival
this week, doing research,
occasionally having fun, writ
ing, signing books and letting
go-
Letting go of those kids who
really are much closer to not
being kids than they are to
being kids. Sigh.
Last night, when the skies
cleared and this lovely cres
cent moon rose in tandem
with a brilliant star, I was able
to get a call through and was
delighted, for a while anyway,
to discover that both my son
and daughter are still alive.
My daughter was on her way
home from a water park when
I asked her how the evening’s
mandatory driver’s education
class was going. This is the
class that cost $350 and this is

“Reunion” marks a ground
breaking concept in series
television as it chronicles the
lives of a group of six friends
over the course of 20 years
- all in just one season.
Will (Will Estes) longs to
leave his small town behind.
Aided by an athletic schol
arship, he is the first in his
family to go to college. Craig
(Sean Faris), handsome and
privileged, looks forward
to the Ivy League with his
girlfriend, Samantha (Alexa
Davalos), whose ambition is
surpassed only by her looks
and intelligence. The beauti

THIS WEEK’S TIP: When
shopping for cell phone ser
vice, whether you’re switching
or a new customer, you should
keep more than price in mind.
The most important thing to
me is, reliability.
For years, I had a cell phone
service provider whose ser
vice, quite frankly, stank. Back
then, I was traveling lot, and I
had to be able to use the phone
from airports, hotels, etc. That
surely wasn’t the case. While
I would notice other travelers
just talking from anywhere in
the airport or hotel, I had to
walk all over God’s creation to
get a signal. It was frustrating.
I finally switched provid
ers, and now, I never have to
worry. On a recent trip, I was
able to call from anywhere
I wanted. Remember, some
times a bargain isn’t as good
as it seems. And that is not to
say I don’t have a good calling
plan for the money. I do. How
ever, I would gladly pay more
the class you MUST have to
get a driver’s license. This is
the class that you are allowed
never to miss. This is also the
class that caused great con
sternation in our lives because
the timing worked for her but
no one else.
Thus the problem last night
of the missed class.
“Oh my God, Mom! I
totally forgot,” she screamed
into the phone. “What am I
going to do?”
So here we go. I’m hundreds
of miles away, her father, my
ex-husband, is right there
driving her home from the ad
venture, and I say something
that is apparently magical and
unusual in my life.
“Honey, you made the mis
take. I’m here. I can’t leave,
so I guess you will have to fix
it yourself.”
Fix it yourself.
I’m not going to lie and say
that I’m not worried and that
I wish I was there but I also
see this as a golden opportu
nity for my lovely teenager to
figure it out. This may end up
costing her time and money,
but really, there isn’t one
single thing I can do from a
dreams of becoming an
actress, and behind his cyni
cism, Aaron (Dave Annable)
dreams that his relationship
with Jenna will go beyond
friendship. Carla (Chyler
Leigh), innocent and quirky,
must choose between loyalty
to her father and staying near
her best friends.
“Reunion” opens in the
present day at the funeral
of one of the friends, whose
death is being investigated
by Detective Marjorino
(Mathew St. Patrick). Before
the identity of the deceased
is revealed, we’re transported
back to 1986, as the group is
celebrating their high school
if I had to because I know I
can count on that cell phone to
work anywhere.

This is a good thing and
probably much better for me
than for her. Letting go is no
easy chore, but really, it’s so
healthy. It might hurt a little
bit, but it’s what makes girls
women.
I remember when I was her
age and on my way to take
my driver’s test. I thought if
I could just pass the test, the
rest of my life would be easy.
I flunked.
My daughter has so many
tests ahead of her that this
mistake will soon be nothing
more than a tiny speck on
her life map. She’ll figure it
out. She’ll pay attention next
time - maybe - and when I get
back, we’ll have yet another
discussion on the importance
of owning your own mistakes.
Until then, I can only look
up at the stars and hope ev
erything else I have given her
these past 15.5 years can hold
her up until I get back.
And then of course, there
will be something else.
