Special to the Ledger
By U.S. Senator Saxby
Chambliss
In the aftermath of Hur
ricane Katrina, so many
Americans in Louisiana, Mis
sissippi and Alabama have lost
their loved ones, their neigh
bors, their homes and all their
worldly possessions. And as
we hear scores
of personal sto
ries and see the
tragic pictures,
it’s clearly evi
dent that this
is a national
tragedy unfold
ing of horrific
proportions.
For my wife,
Julianne, and
I, our hearts
go out to all
the affected
victims and
we pray for
their safety,
health and comfort. Through
numerous phone calls, letters,
and e-mails, I’ve heard similar
expressions of support from
Georgians in overwhelming
numbers offering their prayers
and asking how they can
help these victims and their
families.
One way Georgians can help
the victims and relief efforts
is to contact your local chapter
of the American Red Cross, an
organization that is collecting
donations to directly help the
storms victims. Additionally,
the Federal Emergency Man
agement Agency has posted a
list and contact information of
numerous organizations that
are also accepting donations
or need volunteers to help
Katrina’s victims on their
website at www.fema.gov.
Additionally, September
is designated as National
Prepared
ness Month,
and with the
recent tragedy
across the
Gulf States,
it’s a per
fect time to
remind all
Georgians
about the
importance
of being pre
pared for ei
ther a natural
disaster, such
as a hurricane
or flood, or a
future terrorist attack.
Therefore, I’m urging all
of Georgia’s families to take
some simple, but important
steps today so that your fam
ily will be well prepared for a
future emergency. According
to the Department of Home
land Security, steps include:
Create an Emergency Kit
- An emergency kit should
include supplies that will
allow you and your family
to survive for at least three
days in the event an emer
gency happens. The kit should
Saxby Chambliss
include basic items like water,
food, battery powered radio,
flash light, a first aid kit and
specific needs unique to your
family, such as, daily pre
scription medications, infant
formula or diapers, and im
portant family documents.
Make a Plan - Have a plan
in place for what you and
your family will do in an
emergency and make sure all
your family members know
the plan. To develop one,
ask yourself some important
questions. “In the event of
an emergency, do we have
everyone’s contact numbers
and an out of town contact?’’
“Is there a designated place
for everyone to meet outside
of the home and neighbor
hood?’’ “What is the emergen
cy plan including the evacu
ation location of my child’s
school?’’ While only you can
answer these questions and
develop an emergency plan
that will suit your family’s
unique needs, you can down
load a template to help get you
started at the Department of
Homeland Security’s website
at: www.ready.gov
Be Informed - Learn more
about the different threats
that could affect your com
munity and the appropriate
responses to them. Visit the
websites: www.ready.gov
and www.redcross.org/
preparedness for more infor
mation about natural disasters
and potential terrorist threats
including biological, chemi
cal, nuclear and radiological
emergencies.
Get Involved - After prepar
ing yourself and your family
for possible emergencies, take
the next step: get training
in first aid and emergency
response and get involved in
preparing your community.
While these are just a few
simple steps you can take to
prepare your family, they are
important ones. To learn more
about these steps in greater
detail, I urge you to visit,
www.ready.gov. As tragedies
like Hurricane Katrina showed
us, it’s important everyone be
prepared for any kind of emer
gency. Doing so will not only
help make your family safer
and more comfortable in the
aftermath of any emergency,
but it may just save your lives.
