SBDC and IRS Offer Seminars
Special to the Ledger
New or relatively new
businesses may want to take
advantage of a series of
programs on “Understand
ing Federal Taxes and Your
Business” starting September
30. The three-session series
of seminars will help you
determine the best legal struc
ture for your business, what
records are important and
which expenses are deduct
ible, and understand how to
handle federal payroll taxes.
The seminars will be done by
distance learning and will be
taught by Kathy Hoffmeyer,
a senior tax specialist with
the Internal Revenue Ser
vice. The three sessions are:
Which Legal Structure for My
Business on September 30,
Recordkeeping and Business
Expenses on October 7, and
Understanding Employment
Taxes on October 14.
Each seminar in the series is
a 3-hour class. The seminars
will be offered in Albany,
Columbus, Lawrenceville, and
Macon. Registration for the
seminars begins at 9:00 in the

nar explains the differences
between Sole Proprietorships,
Corporations, Partnerships
and LLC’s and the tax funda
mentals of each entity.
In the Recordkeeping and
Business Expense seminar
you’ll learn you don’t have to
be an accountant to have good
recordkeeping skills. This
seminar explains the basics
of recordkeeping and the
deductibility of expenses. You
will learn what constitutes
adequate records for income,
expenses, assets and liabili
ties and the laws related to
commonly deducted expenses,
such as automobile, travel and
business use of the home.
The Understanding Employ
ment Taxes seminar explains
your responsibilities as an
employer. In it, you will learn
the factors in determining
independent contractor versus
employees, calculation of
federal payroll taxes, federal
unemployment taxes, deposit
requirements, filing require
ments and electronic payment
of payroll taxes.
These seminars are the
result of a distance learn
ing pilot program conducted
over the last two years by the
Georgia SBDC Network and
the Internal Revenue Service.
