1 The Led County Ledger Your Hometown Source Of Local News Hometown newspaper of Aubrey and Barbara McDonald Volume XXVIII - Number 23 Leesburg, Georgia - - February 1,2006 Fifty Cents Smithville Citizens During the Smithville City Council Meeting last Thursday, concerns with the proposed city budget were expressed by citizens at the meeting. Some of the same citizens attended the budget meeting the week before that only had one council member present. The citizens expressed concerns with the budget that the auditor had prepared. The council members were asked about their input and aware ness of the proposed budget. Concerns were expressed that the city budget is $561,910.00 and little ef fort was being made to save money for emergencies. The citizens asked if the council had considered seek ing bids for services by an auditor and city attorney. The citizens expressed their con cern with what services were being performed by the audi tor and attorney to justify a yearly income of $12,000 and a yearly income of $23,000 for the city attorney. Councilman Vincent Cutts said that the city council had not looked at accepting bids for those services since he has been on the council. Council man Cutts said that it would be a good idea to accept bids for those services. Councilman Cutts also assured the citizens that the council members would look at all aspects of the proposed budget before it is approved. Another citizen at the meeting asked the council Express Concerns With City Budget to contact the railroad about repairing the two crossings in the city. Several citizens pointed out that the crossings were in bad condition. The council approved pay ing the railroad a one time life-time payment of $2000 for water and sewer rights under the railroad. City Attor ney Tommy Coleman pointed out that the yearly fee contin ues to increase each year and the one time payment would result in a savings to the city. The council approved a bid from Georgia Rural Water Association for $13,950 to remove duck weed from the holding pond. It was antici pated that it will take approxi mately 60 hours to remove the duck weed. Sentences Issued In Lee County Magistrate Court Sheriff’s Office Files Weekly Report Chief Magistrate Judge Jim Thurman issued sentences in Lee County Magistrate Court January 26. Garett Neal Williams, of 250 Mayfield Drive, Leesburg, charged with possession of marijuana LTO. was sentenced to 12 months supervised pro bation and fined $1403.00. Tiffany Shaiday Sheppard, of 50 Dobbs Street, Albany, charged with theft by shoplift ing, entered into the Pre-Trial Diversion Program. Billy L. Smith, Jr, of 115 Crow Drive, Leesburg, charged with theft by shoplift ing, entered into the Pre-Trial Diversion Program. Jewul Alfhonzo Powell, of 192 Creekview Drive, Leesburg, charged with two counts of animal at large and two counts of no proof rabies, was sentenced to 12 months supervised probation and fined $81.00 on each on the first two counts and 12 months supervised probation and fined $189.00 each on the last two counts. Gordon Akins, of 8658 Highway 53 East, Dawson- ville, charged with disorderly conduct, pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct and requested a bench trail; the court found the defendant guilty and he was sentenced to pay a fine in the amount of $750.00 and forfeited a bond in the amount of $750.00. Eric Daniels, of 1708 Malone Drive Apt. B, Albany, charged with deposit account fraud, forfeited a cash bond of $600.92 Vanessa Washington, of 412 Hickory Groove Lane, Leesburg, charged with de posit account fraud, forfeited a cash bond of $742.70. Vonterius Woolbright, 24, 123 A Winding Way, Leesburg, was charged with driving with suspended li cense first offense, expired tag and altered tag January 29 by Cpl. T. Wertz. Cpl. Wertz and Cpl. Cheshire were respond ing to a residence in the 100 block of Winding Way in ref erence to an unwanted guest. Enroute to the call, Cpl. Wertz observed a vehicle driven by Woolbright that matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle. The officer made a traffic stop in the 300 block of Old Leesburg Road. A check through GCIC showed Woolbright had a suspended license. The tag on the vehicle was expired and the validation sticker did not match the tag. Woolbright was arrested on the listed charges. Crystal Lee Marshall, 31, of 164 A Pelham Drive, Leesburg, was charged January 28 with driving while license suspended first offense, removing or affixing license plate and no tail lights and Walton Wayne Marshall, of 164 A Pelham Drive, Leesburg, was charged with disorderly while intoxicated by Dep. Pressley-Fordham. The arrests were made after Dep. Pressley-Fordham received a call from dispatch about a truck pulling a trailer on Hwy 82 without any work ing trailer lights. The of ficer made a traffic stop with back-up from Cpl. Cheshire. Walton Wayne Marshall was using profanity at Cpl. Cheshire. He was arrested for disorderly while intoxicated. Crystal Lee Marshall was charged after a check of her license revealed the license was suspended. The tag on the trailer belonged on a car. Both individuals were transported to the jail and booked. James Edward Bridges, 56, of 510 W. Lincoln Ave., Albany, was charged with driving with suspended li cense second offense, operat ing vehicle with no insurance and operating unregistered vehicle January 28 by Cpl. T. Wertz. While on patrol on Ledo Road, Cpl. Wertz observed Bridges driving a vehicle without a tag and made a traffic stop. Bridges told Cpl. Wertz that he did not have a license. Bridges was transported to the Lee County Jail and booked for driving with suspended license second offense, operating without insurance and operating un registered vehicle. Rebecca Ann Eubanks, 22, of 1304 Pinewood Road, Leesburg, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol first offense and failure to maintain lane Janu ary 28 by Dep. S. Pressley- Fordham. While patrolling the Oakland Road area near Palmyra Road, Dep. Pressley- Fordham observed Eubanks traveling north on Oakland Road and crossing the center line approximately three times. A traffic stop was made in the 500 block of Century Road. The officer could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle and performed an alco-sensor test on Eubanks which was positive. She was transported to the jail where she was booked. Sara Patterson Averett, 32, of 113 Michaels Circle, was charged January 26 with D.U.I. and open container by Cpl. Hartley. Cpl. Hartley responded to a convenience store in the 1500 bock of Hwy 19 South in reference to an in toxicated female. Capt. Rouse and Cpl. Hartley made contact with Sara Patterson Averett, who was in her vehicle in the parking lot. Averett exited her vehicle and used profanity at the officers. The officers could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage com ing from her breath. She was placed under arrest for D.U.I. and open container after the officers located a partially consumed beer can in her ve hicle. She was transported to the jail where she was booked.
