Smithville Citizens
During the Smithville
City Council Meeting last
Thursday, concerns with the
proposed city budget were
expressed by citizens at the
meeting. Some of the same
citizens attended the budget
meeting the week before that
only had one council member
present.
The citizens expressed
concerns with the budget that
the auditor had prepared. The
council members were asked
about their input and aware
ness of the proposed budget.
Concerns were expressed
that the city budget is
$561,910.00 and little ef
fort was being made to save
money for emergencies.
The citizens asked if the
council had considered seek
ing bids for services by an
auditor and city attorney. The
citizens expressed their con
cern with what services were
being performed by the audi
tor and attorney to justify a
yearly income of $12,000 and
a yearly income of $23,000
for the city attorney.
Councilman Vincent Cutts
said that the city council had
not looked at accepting bids
for those services since he has
been on the council. Council
man Cutts said that it would
be a good idea to accept bids
for those services.
Councilman Cutts also
assured the citizens that the
council members would look
at all aspects of the proposed
budget before it is approved.
Another citizen at the
meeting asked the council
Express Concerns With City Budget
to contact the railroad about
repairing the two crossings
in the city. Several citizens
pointed out that the crossings
were in bad condition.
The council approved pay
ing the railroad a one time
life-time payment of $2000
for water and sewer rights
under the railroad. City Attor
ney Tommy Coleman pointed
out that the yearly fee contin
ues to increase each year and
the one time payment would
result in a savings to the city.
The council approved a bid
from Georgia Rural Water
Association for $13,950 to
remove duck weed from the
holding pond. It was antici
pated that it will take approxi
mately 60 hours to remove the
duck weed.

Several concerned residents questioned the use of an auditor to prepare the
city’s budget instead of the council members preparing the budget.
