Deadline nears for
Rural Development
producer grants
Special to the Ledger
The deadline for farmers
and agricultural producers in
Georgia to apply for $19,475
million in grants to support
the development of value-
added agriculture business is
March 31, 2006, according to
Stone Workman, state director
of USDA Rural Development.
A free grant writing work
shop will be conducted on
February 21 in Macon at the
Farm Bureau Building to help
new applicants.
Priority consideration will
be given to those grant ap
plications that have at least 5
1 % of project costs dedicated
to activities for a bio-energy
project. The renewable energy
projects involve biodiesel,
ethanol or wind energy pro
duction or the use of bio-mass
to generate energy.
At the end of FY 2005, Ag
riculture Secretary Michael
Johanns announced the selec
tion of 171 applications from
42 states to receive over $14.6
million in grant assistance
under the Value Added Pro
ducer Grant program.
In Georgia, two producers
were selected for funding.
White Oak Pastures, owned
by Will Harris of Bluffton,
received a grant for $149,904.
These funds will be used to
pay operating expenses in
the processing and marketing
of the company’s grass-fed
beef products. The second
recipient is Tifton Quality
Peanuts, LLC of Tifton. This
group of 146 area farmers
will receive $150,000 to pay
operating expenses in their
brand new peanut shelling
facility. A complete list of
the grants is available on
the USDA web site at: http:
//www.rurdev.usda.gov
The Value-Added Producer
Grant program was autho
rized by the Agriculture Risk
Protection Act of 2000 (P.L.
106-224) and the 2002 Farm
Bill (P.L. 107-171). Grants are
available to independent pro
ducers, agricultural producer
groups, farmer or rancher
cooperatives, and majority
controlled producer-based
business ventures interested in
a competitively-awarded grant
to fund one of the following
two activities: (1) planning
activities needed to establish a
viable value-added marketing
opportunity for an agricul
tural product (e.g. conduct a
feasibility study, develop a
business plan, develop a mar
keting plan); or (2) acquire
working capital to operate a
value-added business venture
that will allow producers to
better compete in domestic
and international markets.
Awards are made on a
competitive basis. Detailed
information about application
and program requirements
is included in the December
21, 2005, publication of the
Federal Register. More infor
mation about the Value Added
program in Georgia can be
