Leesburg Depot Listed
in National Register
Special to the Ledger
The Leesburg Depot,
located on Walnut Avenue
in downtown Leesburg was
listed in the National Reg
ister on May 12, 2008. The
nomination was sponsored
by the City of Leesburg. The
Historic Preservation Com
mittee for Leesburg Depot
and Paul Forgey,
preservation ^ -
planner for the
Southwest Geor
gia Regional
Development
Center, prepared
the nomination
materials.
Construction
of the Leesburg
Depot began circa 1895. As
was the custom at the time,
railroad carpenters likely
built the wooden depot. The
impetus for its construction
was to provide a larger facil
ity for the growing commu
nity and it became the center
of town, serving as a pas
senger and freight depot, as
well as the telegraph office.
The depot is significant in
the area of social history for
its reflection of how public
facilities were segregated
during the late 19th and the
first half of the 20th centu
ries with separate waiting
rooms for white and African-
American travelers.
Leesburg Depot is sig
nificant in the area of
architecture as a good and
intact example of a simple
1890s depot in Georgia. The
interior of the depot retains
its original floor plan with
segregated passenger wait
ing rooms at the south end
of the building, an office in
the center of the building,
and a large freight/baggage
room on the north end of the
building. The rail-side of
the building has a projecting
bay where the ticket office
was located. The depot also
retains its historic inte
rior finishes and materials
including the wood floors,
interior walls, and ceiling. It
has a gable, metal roof and
six-over-six wood windows
and retains its freight and
passenger doors. The City
of Leesburg purchased the
depot in 1960 and has used
the building since that time.
The National Register is
the federal government’s
official list of historic
buildings, structures, sites,
objects, and districts worthy
of preservation. According to
Richard Cloues, deputy state
historic preservation officer,
listing in the National Reg
ister recognizes a property’s
significance and ensures that
the property will be taken
into account in the plan
ning of federally funded or
licensed projects. In addition,
owners of income producing
National Register properties
may be eligible for rehabili
tation tax incentives.

Marijuana Grow Equipment Seized
The Lee County Sheriff’s
Office, in a joint operation
with the DEA and GBI,
tracked down the rest of
Michael Suber’s grow equip
ment in Santa Rosa Beach,
Florida. Santa Rosa is in
Walton County
The equipment was being
stored at one of Suber’s
friend’s residence. On June
8, 2008, a search warrant
was served in the residence
and enough equipment to
facilitate a large marijuana
grow operation was recov
ered.
Equipment seized in
cluded high intensity lights,
electrical equipment, large
charcoal filter, plant buckets,
a hydration system, power
supplies, portable AC unit
and other items.
Last year, Lee County
Sheriff’s Office, GBI and
DEA executed a search
warrant on Michael Suber’s
residence on Florida Short
Route in Terrell County.
While marijuana grow
equipment was located, it
was obvious that the main
grow equipment had been
moved.
After the execution of that
search warrant, Michael
Suber went on the run from
federal and state agents. He
was later arrested in Florida
on multiple drug offenses.
Over 20 people have been
charged since last year in
connection with the large
marijuana growth operation.
Lee County Sheriff’s Offices
have seized over $20,000 in
cash, motorcycles, cars and
houses.
