What The Bible Teaches
Christ’s Sanctified Holy Church
Gary’s
Musings
By Gary Collier
By Frank Taylor
Continuing with the study
I started last week concern
ing what the
Bible teaches
about the gift
of tongues,
we read in
Acts 10:46,
“For they
heard them
speak with
tongues, and
magnify God.
Then answered
Peter” This occurrence of
the phenomenon, speaking
in tongues, actually occurred
in the house of Cornelius.
Luke’s terminology in this
chapter ten of Acts is similar
to that in chapter two of
Acts. He uses the Greek
word “glossa,” and we have
no reason to believe that he
means anything other than
that which he clearly means
in Acts chapter two, known
languages. Furthermore,
there were again Jews pres
ent, confirming again Paul’s
statement regarding the
intent of the gift.
We read in Acts 19:6,
“And when Paul had laid his
hands upon them, the Holy
Ghost came on them; and
they spake with tongues,
and prophesied.” This final
occurrence in the Acts con
cerns John’s disciples, who
met Paul and heard from him
that they had been in a half
way house between Juda
ism and Christianity. They
were baptized by Paul and
spoke in tongues in evidence
of the coming of the Holy
Spirit upon them. Again,
the terminology of Luke is
similar to that of Pentecost
(“glossa” is used again), and
there is no sound exegetical
reason which would demand
a different sense from that
normally to be expected.
They spoke in known lan
guages, or tongues. As also
in the other occurrences,
Jews were present, and Paul’s
words regarding the intent of
the gift are confirmed a third
time.
There is one final thing
that ought to be mentioned
at this point. It is well
known that the ter
minology of Luke in
Acts and of Paul in 1
Corinthians is the same.
In spite of this some
have contended for a
difference between the
gift as it occurred in
Acts and as it occurred
in Corinth. This is
manifestly impossible
from the standpoint of the
terminology. This conclu
sion is strengthened when we
remember that Luke and Paul
were constant companions
and would have, no doubt,
used the same terminology
in the same sense. In fact,
it is most likely that Luke
learned the nature of the
gift from Paul. He certainly
was informed by Paul of the
unique case of the disciples
of John at Ephesus, and it
is not unnatural to suppose
that he knew of the events in
Corinth through Paul, too.
In other words, it is most
likely that the early believ
ers used a fixed terminology
in describing this gift, a
terminology understood by
them all. If this be so, then
the full description of the gift
on Pentecost must be allowed
to explain the more lim
ited descriptions that occur
elsewhere.
So then, to summarize,
the gift of tongues accord
ing to Acts was a gift which
enabled its recipients to
speak in known tongues, or
languages, at certain times
determined by the Holy
Spirit in order to authenti
cate the message of the early
Church in the presence of
Jews. That it was not univer
sally practiced by believers
in the early Church is evident
from its limited occurrence
in the Acts period, as well
as from specific statements
in the epistles (cf. 1 Cor. 12:
30; Heb. 2:3-4). The force
of the Greek aorist tense
“ebebaiothe” translated in
the King James Version,
“was confirmed” in Hebrews
2:3 is often overlooked. The
author in this reference to the
confirmation of the message
of salvation by the sign gifts
in Hebrews 2:4, “God also
bearing them witness, both
with signs and wonders,
and with divers miracles,
and gifts of the Holy Ghost,
according to his own will”
apparently looks upon this
confirmation as a thing of
the past. The inference, and,
of course, it is only infer
ence, is that the miraculous
gifts have ceased since the
reception of the message.
The use of the Greek phrase
A question that I have
heard several Christians ask
ing in the last few weeks is,
“Are we living in the
end times?” I have
been pondering that
question myself, but
I have to answer hon
estly, I really don’t
know. For that mat
ter, nobody knows so
don’t be deceived by
anyone who comes
up with a date for the
return of Christ.
I have a question for you:
“Are you ready for the return
of Jesus which is commonly
called the rapture?” The
Bible teaches that the rapture
is imminent, meaning that
it could happen at any time.
The apostle Paul believed
that the return of Christ
could have happened in his
life time. Listen to what he
says in 1 Corinthians 15:
52, “in a moment, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the
last trumpet; for the trumpet
will sound, and the dead will
be raised imperishable, and
we will be changed.” Paul
was living with an attitude
of expectancy in the return
“eis hemas” translated in the
King James Version, “unto
us” in connection with the
author of Hebrews and his
readers, who were Jews, is
also in harmony with the evi
dence from the Acts and the
epistles. The gift concerned
Jews.
If you have a question
concerning a topic in Scrip
ture that you don’t quite
understand and would like
clarification of the Word,
feel free to contact the Lee
County Ledger with your
questions. I will be very
happy to explain the Word as
the Lord has revealed to me
in upcoming articles.
of Jesus.
Here is another question I
want you to think about: “If
you knew for a
fact that Jesus was
going to return
sometime the next
day, would you do
anything differ
ently?” If you are
like me it would
give a sense of
urgency to what
really matters
most and that is the salvation
of souls. Now the truth of
the matter is that Jesus could
come back some time tomor
row because we don’t know
when He is coming back.
Let me give you a life
changing principle: Live
each day as if Jesus were
coming back. I don’t know
about you, but I want to
be ready for the return of
Christ. This truth of the
imminent return of Christ
should motivate us to live
holy lives. I like what Paul
said in 1 Timothy 6:14-15,
“that you keep the com-
See Words,

Have you ever tried to
make water float in the air?
God does it every day with
clouds. Could you draw
1,000 faces and make them
all look different? God does
every day with newborn
babies.
Could you invent a system
that would take the extra
water from the lakes and
oceans and put it back at the
top of the mountains - with
out plumbing? Sorry, God
beat you to it. Could you
build a heater big enough to
warm up the globe so things
would grow? If so, where
would you store it? Oh yeah,
how would it warm all sides
of our round earth?
So you figured out that we
need a sun, fixed in space.
Good idea. And that our
planet needs to rotate so that
the sun warms it on all sides.
Hey, that’s slick thinking.
Now tell me how you’re
going to spin that planet at
1,038 mph and keep any
thing standing on it? How
will you keep humans and
animals standing and build
ings erect at that speed?
Oh, right, gravity. Why
didn’t I think of that first?
Next you’re gonna tell me
that you’ve thought of a way
to take a sperm from a man
and an egg from a woman
and combine them together
in a built-in incubator to
start the next generation.
You did already? Sure. No
problem. That might be why
you got A’s in science and I
didn’t.
So how can you take
bones, muscles and organs,
connect them all together
and keep them from falling
out? You say you invented
skin? That sounds good.
How will you keep it
together if it’s torn or dam
aged? Right, a built-in heal
ing system. C’mon, you’re
kidding me, right?
So who can invent a pump
that will pump 86,000 times
a day, 31 million times a
year and over 2 billion times
before it stops? Oh, you can’t
use gasoline or oil to run it,
by the way. You guessed it;
God beat you to it when he
invented the heart.
Obviously I could go on
and on with this list. God
spoke much of this to Job
when he challenged him
“Where were you when I
laid the foundations of the
earth?” (Job 38:4) This goes
on for the next couple of
chapters. God humiliated
Job by reminding him of
His greatness in all created
things. Job felt mighty dumb
that he had ever questioned
God’s part in his life.
What does it say to God
when we treat him as a
personal servant? “God,
help me out of this.” Or
“God, please do this for
me.” He’s given us so much
that we take for granted. He
deserves better status than
most of us give Him in our
lives.
We think we can make our
own decisions, chart our own
course and set our own sails
better than God can. We rely
on our 3 lb. brain instead of
asking God for help.
What can you do that God
can’t do better?
