Soul
Food
from the Hood
By Keith Hood
“This above all: To thine
own self be true, for it must
follow as dost the night the
day, that
canst not
be false to
any man.”
Shake
speare
quilled the
now famous
quotation
in his work Hood
“Hamlet.”
He, of course, was quoting
from his inspiration Socrates
who composed “Know
Thyself.”
What did Shakespeare
really mean when he wrote
that? Polonius prepares his
son Laertes for an extended
journey and exhorts him
to commit a few things to
memory. He is not saying to
Laertes, “If it feels good, do
it!” That certainly wouldn’t
lit with the one-year recov
ery coins of AA. They have
“to thine own self be true”
stamped on one side. On the
other side it has the Seren
ity Prayer. If one comes
through the 12-step recovery
program, one must state, “I
am a recovering alcoholic.”
That is being true to one’s
self first. Then comes the
recovery.
When I used to hear “To
thine own self be true,” it
always rung to me as, “I’m
looking out for number one,
and that’s me! I’m looking
out for number 1!” BTO
used to sing that to me all
the time on my 8-track tape
player. OK. So I’m not the
most literate in Shakespeare.
So there’s your pound of
flesh.
That having been said, the
flip side of the coin is not
intended to be a negative but
a positive. I know who I am,
and I’m not going to forget
it. There are some people
out there who are untrue to
themselves by being terrified
of what others may think
of them. They think that to
look at oneself objectively
is to assume all fault in the
incident. Would God have us
act that way? “God forbid!”
“May it never be!”
Jesus said you shall know
the truth and the truth will
make you free. (John 8:32)
Once you know the truth,
you can stand on it. Spend
ing time with God in His
Word and prayer gives great
confidence. “But you shall
receive power when the Holy
Spirit comes upon you.”(Acts
1:8) “No, in all these things,
we are more than conquer
ors through Him who loved
us.”(Romans 8:37)
Some of you are afraid to
tell your husbands or wives
about your true Christian
faith. In your heart you know
the truth but you’ve drifted.
“To thine own self, be true,
for it must follow as dost
the night the day, that canst
not be false to any man.”
You’ve got children with that
person and they don’t have
Christian fellowship either.
“To thine own self be true.”
Let the truth make you free.
Give the others at least the
opportunity to know that
freedom.
“For God has not given us
a spirit of fear, but of power
and of love and of sound
mind.” The NRSV reads
like this: “For God did not
give us a spirit of cowardice,
but rather a spirit of power
and of love and of self-disci
pline.”^ Timothy 1:7)
For those of us who are
Christians, we can live in
victory today, not just in the
hereafter. “Love you neigh
bor as yourself.” “But to
thine own self be true.” How
can you love your neighbor
as you ought if you haven’t
first loved yourself? “For it
must follow as dost the night
the day, that canst not be
false to any man.”
