Georgia Revenue Department Uncovers
Two Nationwide Check Scams
Special to the Ledger
The Georgia Department
of Revenue has uncovered
two nationwide check scams
that involve fake DOR
checks and incorrect bank
ing information.
In the first scam, individu
als receive a letter from a
Canadian-based company
which states “your grant in
the amount of $50,000.00
(Fifty Thousand Dollars) has
been approved.’’ Attached to
the letter is a check, which
appears to have been issued
by the Georgia Department
of Revenue.

The letter asks the recipi
ent to call a Canadian phone
number “immediately to
verify your file’’ and to
“prevent any delay with the
release of your grant.’’ The
letter specifies a deadline in
which to claim the grant.
During the phone call, an
agent attempts to get the
caller to divulge personal
information including their
bank account information.
Some recipients have de
posited the check into their
banking account. However,
the check is blocked when
it attempts to clear DOR’s
account. When this oc
curs, the bank where the
original deposit was made
asks the depositor to return
any money they received
as a result of depositing the
fraudulent check. The bank
might also charge addi
tional administrative fees
for depositing a check with
insufficient funds.
“The Georgia Depart
ment of Revenue does not
mail checks to individuals
through any third party,’’
said Georgia Revenue Com
missioner Bart L. Graham.
“Checks issued by the Geor
gia Department of Revenue
are mailed directly to the
check’s payee.’’
The second scam involves
a company (identified on the
check as AIRSERV located
in Atlanta) issuing checks
with inaccurate banking
information.
Other signs to look for
regarding these scams:
• The social security
number displays the wrong
number of digits and has a
different font than the rest of
the check.
• There is no social secu
rity number entered on the
check.
• The check’s number is in
a different font.
• The check is issued by
AIRSERV.
Individuals receiving one
of these letters or checks
should take it to their nearest
law enforcement office and
fill out a Victim of Fraud
complaint. They should
also report the matter to the
Georgia Department of Rev
enue at 404-417-4460.

Congratulations to Buster Posey! He is so deserv
ing of all that he has achieved! He is truly a great
ball player, and has shown so much character in
many ways. Lee County should be proud!
Is anyone else having problems in Lee County with
speeders in their nice quaint subdivisions 1 cul-de-
sacs? It's a real nuisance in mine, and there are no
traf fic signs posted as of three years and counting.
I plan to call the county.
Gas was $3.89 in Cordele. Why is it so much
higher here?
If you plan to save gas by having your children
ride the bus, they will need a fan because it is hot!
Has the level of asbestos at the old Twin Oaks
been checked during the construction? A county
worker said it was present.
We have nosy and the rudest neighbors on our
street in the Huntingdon Subdivision. If they would
get a job like the rest of us, they wouldn't have so
much time on their hands. By the way, neighbors
take care of your own business and stay out of
other people's business.
The supervision of the community service workers
needs strengthening. The public works employee
has no authority to punish the community service
workers for talking back, not working or being late.
They should be supervised by someone with the
authority to enforce the law. By them doing as they
want, it is not serving the purpose of punishment as
assigned by the judges. Those in charge should cor
rect this injustice immediately.
Gas is sold by the same jobber from Albany to
outlets in Albany, Leesburg and Americus, but is
cheaper in Americus.
Thanks commissioners for not raising my taxes.
My family and I thank you.
KUDOS to the Georgia Power crew that was on
Fussell Road late Sunday night replacing the trans
former that was struck by lightening. You never
know how valuable they are until your electricity if
off for 8 hours.
I respectfully have to disagree with a point of one
of Lou Sheffield's articles. Concerning the exemp
tion of law enforcement vehicles from take home
policy. ANY law, fire, or EMS personnel worth their
salt hopefully would not consider whether they
were driving an official or personal vehicle to deter
mine whether to render assistance to someone in
need or not.
Two BIG thumbs-up to the Lee County inmates
who constructed replacement birdhouses for the
ones that were stolen from the Boney Senior Cen
ter. Perhaps the Lee County Ledger and/or Albany
Herald could find a story in these great folks and
the program they represent.
Everyone needs and deserves adequate fire and
EMS service including my friends in north Lee
County.
Now that the depot has been placed on the Na
tional Register, maybe it will get repaired and not
be an eyesore.
I would like to commend the inmates at Lee State
Prison for their contribution to the senior center in
Leesburg. Enjoying the birds behind the center is a
treat.
