Cranked Up About
Fluorocarbon
If you respool your reels
as much as I do, I hope you
stocked up on some extra fluo
rocarbon line recently because
it’s summer and you’re going to
need it.
Summertime fishing condi
tions are different from any
other time of the year. Much
of this centers around water
clarity. In short, summertime
brings about some of the year’s
clearest water conditions.
Unlike the spring when most
places receive much of their
rainfall, the summer is usually
dry and free of precipitation.
This results in less runoff and
clearer water. Also, summer
brings about rapid growth in
shoreline vegetation, which
filters the water. Plus, summer
fish are usually more finicky
about what they eat. All this
boils down to fish a better look
at your bait.
By this of year, pretty much
all of my go-to presenta
tions are being thrown on the
new Berkley Trilene 100%
Fluorocarbon line (this stuff
is awesome, but we’ll get to it
in later). I use fluorocarbon as
a leader when flipping a jig on
braid, I use it to pop a spoon in
deep water and to stroke a jig
and a plastic worm. But most
importantly, I use it for deep
cranking. About the only thing
I don’t do with fluorocarbon
is throw topwater baits - and
that’s only because fluorocar
bon line sinks.
Deep cranking is one of my
favorite ways to catch fish in
the summer. This time of year,
a lot of the fish have pulled
off the bank and are settled
in deeper water near structure
like rock piles, tree stumps,
ledges and things like that.
With deep cranking, line vis
ibility really isn’t an issue like
it is when you throw a shaky
head jig or a plastic worm. But,
Trilene 100% fluorocarbon is
more invisible underwater than
other lines, so it does have that
going for it.
But most importantly, the
new Trilene 100% fluorocar
bon line has an incredible
strength-to-diameter ratio. For
example, 10-pound Trilene
100% fluorocabon has a small-

I’ve been ask to explain why
we didn’t have many love bugs
this spring, well my uneducat
ed guess would be we’ve had a
wet spring and if our showers
keep coming in the evening
there wont be any this fall, if
you remember the dry years
are when they are the wourst.
Dog days are here already
and will last until Sept. This
is the time when the Dog Star
shines which is Sirius. This is
the time when the song birds
do not sing, the reason they
don’t sing is because they
shed their plumich and are not
pretty to look at. Sometime in
the early to mid Sept, they will
sing again.
The deadly fire ant effects
all life in the southeastern
U.S.A.. This little pest now
has a preditor that will con
sume him. "The Phorid” fly is
his name. He was brought into
this county by universities of
seven states and it is a proven
fact that each fly will kill 200
to 300 fire ants in its lifetime
and they have been released in
11 south eastern states so far.
