What The Bible Teaches
By Frank Taylor
Last week we began a
series of lessons examining
some attributes
of the Bible
that reinforce
our reasons
why we should
study the
Bible. The
attributes we
covered are
the Bible is
infallible in its
total, inerrant
in its parts, and it is com
plete.
This week we will learn
the Bible is authoritative.
The Bible is the final author
ity. Isaiah 1:2a says, “Hear,
O heavens, and give ear, O
earth: for the LORD hath
spoken” When God speaks
everybody listens, because
His Word is the final au
thority; the Bible demands
obedience. We can discuss
its implications, its applica
tions, and its meanings, but
we shouldn’t discuss whether
or not it is true.
In John 8 Jesus was
confronted by some of the
Jewish leaders, and there
were other people present.
John 8:30b-31 says, “Many
believed on him. Then said
Jesus to those Jews who
believed on him, If ye con
tinue in my word, then are
ye my disciples indeed.” In
other words, He demanded
response to His Word. It is
authoritative. In Galatians
3:10b it says, “Cursed is
every one that continueth
not in all things which are
written in the book of the
law, to do them.” Amazing!
Cursed was anyone who
didn’t continue in every
thing that was written in the
law. That’s a tremendous
claim to absolute authority.
In James 2:9-10 we read,
“But if ye have respect to
persons, ye commit sin, and
are convinced of the law as
transgressors. For whosoev
er shall keep the whole law,
and yet offend in one point,
he is guilty of all!' To violate
the Bible at one point is
to break God’s law. The
Bible is authoritative
in every part.
In addition to the
Bible being infallible,
inerrant, complete and
authoritative, it is suf
ficient. In 2 Timothy 3:
15 Paul said to Timo
thy, “And that from a
child thou hast known
the holy scriptures, which
are able to make thee wise
unto salvation through faith
which is in Christ Jesus!'
First of all, the Bible is
sufficient to make you wise
unto salvation. Ask yourself
this question: What is more
important than salvation?
Nothing! It is the greatest
reality in the universe—and
the Bible reveals that salva
tion.
2 Timothy 3:16 says,
“All scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and
is profitable for doctrine’'
-that means “teaching,
principles of wisdom, divine
standards, or divine truths’’;
“for reproof’’ -means you’re
able to go to someone and
say, “Hey, you’re out of line.
You can’t behave like that;
there’s a standard and you’re
not keeping it.’’ Scripture is
also profitable “for correc
tion’’ -that says to the person
you’ve just reproved, “Now
don’t do that, do this instead;
this is the right path.’’ You
teach, you reprove, and you
show the correct way— and
further it is profitable “for
instruction in righteous
ness.’’ Now you point to the
new way and show them
how to walk in it. The Bible
is a fantastic Book. It can
take somebody who doesn’t
know God, who isn’t saved,
and then save them and
bring them to the knowledge
of God. Then it will teach
them, reprove them when
Taylor
they do wrong, point out the
right thing to do, and then
show them how to walk in
that right path. The result of
this is stated in 2 Timothy
3:17: “That the man of God
may be perfect, throughly
furnished unto all good
works!' The incredible real
ity of the Bible is that it is
sufficient to do the whole
job.
We read in Romans 15:4,
“For whatsoever things were
written aforetime were writ
ten for our learning, that
we through patience and
comfort of the scriptures
might have hopd! The Bible
is the source of patience and
comfort, ultimately giving
us hope now and forever.
I think of the tremendous
text of James 1:25, “But
whosoever looketh into the
perfect law of liberty, and
continueth in it, he being
not a forgetful hearer, but a
doer of the work, this man
shall be blessed in his deed!
That’s great! When you read
it and then do it -you’re
blessed. Back in James 1:21,
James says that we should
“receive with meekness the
engrafted word, which is
able to save your souls.” The
Greek text literally means it
is able to “save your life.” In
other words, it will save your
life if you receive the Word
of God. I think by that James
means that it will give you
the fullest life imaginable.
But it is possible also for a
Christian that doesn’t obey
the Word of God to lose his
physical life. We see this in
1 Corinthians 11:30 where it
says, “For this cause many
are weak and sickly among
you, and many sleep!' So
James is telling us, “If we
receive the engrafted Word,
and obey it, and continue in
it, it has an incredible way
of perfecting us, of blessing
and saving our lives.” All
these things are true of the
Word of God.
From The Bible
By Jerry Kingery
Gideon and the fleece
And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the
LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have
seen an angel of the LORD face to face. And the LORD said
unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. Then
Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jeho-
vahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto
him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock
of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy
father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it: And build
an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in
the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a
burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut
down. Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as
the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared
his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not
do it by day, that he did it by night. And when the men of the
city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was
cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the
second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built. And
they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when
they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash
hath done this thing. Then the men of the city said unto Joash,
Bring out thy son, that he may .
die: because he hath cast down See Bible, page 3B

Musings
By Gary Collier
“Summertime and
the livin’ is easy”, Ella
Fitzgerald used to sing. It’s
that time of the year for
2008. Folks are on vaca
tion, tanning at the beach,
enjoying July 4 th festivi
ties last week and enjoy
ing the break between
school years. Attendance
at church is down every
where - it happens every
year.
It’s easy to relax and
take things easy with
your spiritual life too.
Who needs to read the
Bible when you can read
a novel? Why listen to
spiritual hymns when you
can listen to beach music?
Hey, it’s summer, why not
take a break from church
and God too? That’s what
the guy with the red suit
and horns wants you to
believe.
One friend told me
recently that he forgot
his Bible when he went
to Florida on vacation.
There wasn’t a Bible in the
condo where they stayed.
He said he could feel a
marked difference in his
relationship with God over
the course of the week
without that in his daily
life. Amazing.
Of course summertime
is also when churches
hold VBS (Vacation Bible
School, for the Yankees :-)
and when some churches
still hold camp meetings.
Our church has held a
week-long camp meeting
at our camp ground near
Perry continuously since
1939. It’s a highlight of the
calendar year for all mem
bers, regardless of where
they live or what congre
gation they’re a part of.
People come from across
the country for this re
vival of old-time singing,
preaching, praying and
shouting. Friendships are
renewed, souls are revived
and many lost people find
God during this incredible
week of fellowship.
The message this week is
that you and I need God in
everything we do, what
ever time of the year it is.
Yes, we even need Him
to go on vacation with us!
The Holy Spirit is the con
stant that keeps our minds
renewed, our hearts joyful
and our thoughts and in
tents focused on God.
We are in a war. The
Bible talks about armor,
war, soldiers, fighting the
good fight of faith and
uses many other simi
lar metaphors. We don’t
decide to serve God and
then rest on fluffy white
clouds while angels fan us
and bring us refreshments.
Satan is like a lion walk
ing around looking for his
next meal, the Bible tells
us. Guess who he’s got in
mind for that next meal?
Yup, you ‘n me.
So enjoy your summer
and take that breather
when you get your chance.
Don’t forget to take God
with you and to spend
time alone with Him
while you’re there. That is
the rest for the people of
God that Hebrews 4 talks
about.
Are you resting in Him?
