What The Bible Teaches
Christ’s Sanctified Hoiy Church
pary’s
Musings
By Gary Collier
Special to the Ledger
By Frank Taylor
Continuing with our
examination of
the attributes
of the Bible
that we began
two weeks ago,
what have we
said so far? We
have seen that
the Word of
God is “infal
lible” in total,
“inerrant” in
its parts, “complete” so that
nothing is to be diminished
or added to it, “authorita
tive” so that whatever it
says is absolutely true and
commands our obedience
and “sufficient” so that it is
able to do to us and for us
everything we need.
Listen to the words of
Isaiah 55:11, “So shall my
word be that goeth forth out
of my mouth: it shall not
return unto me void, but it
shall accomplish that which
Ipleasdi That’s great! God’s
Word is “effective’.’ One of
the incredible things about
being a teacher of the Word
of God is that it will do what
it says it will do.
In 1 Thessalonians 1:5 we
see a great verse about the
effectiveness of the Scrip
ture: “For our gospel came
not unto you in word only,
but also in power, and in
the Holy Spirit, and in much
assurance.” In other words,
when you hear the Word
of God, it isn’t just words.
When the Word goes forth it
has power; it is powered by
the Holy Spirit, and we have
the assurance that it will do
what it says.
Finally, we come to our
last attribute of the Word of
God that we will discuss.
The Bible is “determina
tive.” This is because how
you respond to the Word of
God determines the es
sence of your life and your
eternal destiny. In John 8:
47 Jesus said, “He that is of
God heareth God's words:
ye therefore hear them not,
because ye are not of
God!' In other words,
the determination of
whether an individual
is of God or not of God
is based on whether he
listens to the Word of
God. First Corinthians
2:9 says, “Eye hath not
seen, nor ear heard,
neither have entered
into the heart of man,
the things which God hath
prepared for them that
love him!' Man could never
conceive of God’s domin
ion on his own. Man could
never conceive that he would
be a part of it. Man could
never conceive in his own
humanness, in his own pat
terns of logic, all that God
has prepared for him. But
First Corinthians 2:10-12
say, “But God hath revealed
them unto us by his Spirit:
for the Spirit searcheth all
things, yea, the deep things
of God. For what man
knoweth the things of a man,
save the spirit of man which
is in him? Even so the things
of God knoweth no man,
but the Spirit of God. Now
we have received, not the
spirit of the world, but the
spirit which is of God; that
we might know the things
that are freely given to us
of God'. Then we read in
first Corinthians 2:14, “But
the natural man receiveth
not the things of the Spirit
of God!' Now there are two
kinds of people: the people
who receive the things of
God, and the people who
do not—the people who
can receive, and the people
who cannot. The unbeliev
ing people can’t receive it
because they don’t have the
Holy Spirit. But the people
who know God have the
Holy Spirit, and they receive
the Word of God. You see,
it’s a determiner. Those
people who receive the Word
of God indicate by their
understanding of it that they
possess the Holy Spirit—and
that proves that they are
believers.
I remember talking with
a number of individuals who
continually admitted that
they didn’t understand the
Bible. But these individu
als couldn’t understand the
Scriptures because they
Matthew 5:10-12, “Blessed
are those who have been per
secuted for the sake of righ
teousness, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you
when people insult
you and persecute
you, and falsely
say all kinds of evil
against you because
of Me. Rejoice and
be glad, for your
reward in heaven
is great, for in the same way
they persecuted the prophets
who were before you.”
I would have loved to seen
the faces of Jesus’ disciples
and of those who were
listening to Jesus, this had to
be quite a shock to them. Of
all the beatitudes, this last
one seems to be the most
contrary to human think
ing. Especially after Jesus
just had said, “Blessed are
the peacemakers, for they
shall be called sons of God”.
What Jesus is saying in this
final beatitude is that if you
live out these beatitudes you
will, at some time, suffer
persecution.
Sad to say though, many
Christians have gotten
caught up in the “political
correctness” movement and
don't want to rock the boat.
Moral relativism has crept
didn’t have the one thing
necessary to understand the
Bible—the indwelling of
the Holy Spirit in their soul.
So, the beauty, glory, and
capabilities of the Word of
God are presented to us in
these simple words we have
discussed these last three
weeks; they are infallible,
inerrant, complete, authori
tative, sufficient, effective,
and determinative.
into the church in a big way
with the idea of not want
ing to impose their values
on anyone else and believ
ing the lie that all
truth is relative.
Many churches
across America are
preaching a gospel
of easy believeism
that doesn't cost
them anything.
Warren Wiersebe
once said, “There
is a brand of Christianity
today that seems unlike
the kind that Jesus spoke
about in the Gospels. It is an
easygoing, popular kind of
religion that is acceptable to
the world because it involves
no conviction and no cross,
or at least no cross as Jesus
spoke it.”
Jesus is saying in this last
beatitude that persecution
is reality to those who are
living out the beatitudes.
Notice that Jesus uses the
word “when” and not “if”.
Paul tells us in 2 Timothy 3:
12, “All who desire to live
godly in Christ Jesus will be
persecuted.” When we are
not persecuted in some way
by society it means that we
are reflecting society rather
than confronting society.

One of my passions is
playing acoustic guitar.
I’ve tried playing other
instruments and enjoy that
too, but there’s something
about the sound of a 6-
string guitar that appeals
to me tonally. The first
thing I do when I pick one
up to play it is to check
that it’s in tune. Each
string is a different note
and sounds different when
picked alone.
Humidity and other
factors affect an acoustic
guitar as the wood shrinks
and swells. When the
humidity changes the pitch
of the strings change and
the guitar can easily go out
of tune. If I just pick one
string it may not be obvi
ous at first that it’s slightly
flat or sharp. But when
I pick the other strings I
can quickly tell if one or
more strings need adjust
ment. A dissonant note
on one string will show
up quickly when played
against the background of
the other in-tune strings.
It reminds me of our
lives. They’re composed
of several important parts
that affect our happiness
and our joy. One part
that’s out of whack can
make all of the other parts
sound terrible, can’t it?
Our bodies are one
“string” that affects us.
If we’re feeling terrible
in our bodies it’s hard to
focus on anything else.
We can become cranky,
irritable and snappy when
some small part of our
body isn’t acting or feeling
right. Too often we don’t
pay attention to keeping
our bodies in good shape
until we’re forced to.
C’mon, we’re smarter than
that - aren’t we?
Another “string” that’s
easy to fall out of tune is
our emotions. It’s amaz
ing how they’re affected
by small tiny things that
happen to us. A comment,
a thought, a fear or a pre
monition can affect how
we feel until we’ve tuned
out everything else but
that one emotion, allowing
it to flame up and consume
us. Wow.
What about our finances?
That affects how we feel
at times, doesn’t it? If we
don’t keep that part of our
lives “in tune” it can cer
tainly make us feel sour.
Relationships come next
on the list. A sour relation
ship can affect you and
make your life out of tune.
Today, do the right thing
and take a bold step at
mending a damaged rela
tionship in your life. Even
if your effort fails you’ll
feel better for forgiving
and for moving forward
with your life.
There are many other
examples, obviously. The
harmony of our life starts
with our relationship with
Jesus Christ. If that part
is “out of tune” then other
parts will be too, every
time. God loves and works
with every person during
their lifetime. Are you
listening to His voice in
your life?
Will you let Him tune
you up?
