Georgia’s initial unemployment claims
continue to run well above last year

changed their wedding vows
Friday, May 23, 2008. The
ceremony was held at the
Botanical Gardens Chapel in
Athens, Georgia.
Pastor Sky Pratt officiated
the 5:30 p.m. ceremony. The
bride was escorted by her
father, Roebie Burriss.
The bride carried a bouquet
of stargazer lilies, freesia
and wild roses.
Amanda Carter, of Athens,
Georgia, was the maid of
honor.
The bridesmaids were
Evelyn Abels, of Athens,
Georgia, Becky Brannon,
of Athens, Georgia, Kristin
Cawley, of Athens, Georgia,
and Sarah Reagin, of Lex
ington, Kentucky.
Adam Herrin, of Rincon,
Georgia, was the bestman.
Groomsmen were Buck
Burriss, of Leesburg, Geor
gia, Clint Collins, of Athens,
Georgia, Seth Gregory, of
Athens, Georgia and Brick
Salazar, of Athens, Georgia.
Kelli Parker provided piano
music for the ceremony.
A reception was held at
Foundry Park Inn in Athens,
Georgia.
The couple will reside in
Atlanta, Georgia.

The Georgia Department
of Labor announced that
45,553 laid-off workers filed
first-time claims for unem
ployment insurance benefits
in June. The May to June
increase was 1.9 percent.
Most of the increase came
in trade and services. Initial
claims are considered to be a
good barometer of economic
activity.
State Labor Commissioner
Michael Thurmond said,
“The June report is further
confirmation of the trend
toward higher unemploy
ment. Since the beginning of
the year, initial claims have
been running in excess of 30
percent over the same period
last year. The economic
downturn that began with the
credit crunch has acceler
ated with significant costs of
food and fuel causing many
employers to reduce hiring
or eliminate jobs.
“I encourage job seekers to
take note that some employ
ers are still hiring and that

Badge among numerous
Viet Nam area Medals. He
also served fifteen months
in the Dominican Republic
and six and one half years
in Germany. He served five
years in the 82nd Airborne
Division, one year in the
101st Airborne in Viet Nam
and eight years in Special

Forces Units. He was a Mas
ter Parachutist.
University of Georgia awards
2008 Charter Scholarships

The 2008 freshman class
at the University of Georgia
will include 331 undergrad
uates who have been award
ed Charter Scholarships by
the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions.
The Charter Scholarship,
named to reflect the uni
versity’s distinction as the
nation’s first state-chartered
public university, recogniz
es first-year students with
stellar academic records,
leadership and community
involvement and a respect
for and commitment toward
intellectual, social and cul
tural diversity. The Charter
Scholarship is funded by
the University of Georgia
Foundation.
In-state students receive
$1,000 per year in addition
to the HOPE Scholarship.
Out-of-state recipients are
given non-resident tuition
waivers with their $1,000
annual scholarships. Usu
ally the top five percent of
entering first-year students

a minimum 3.0 grade point
average out of a possible 4.0

average high school GPA
exceeded 4.0.
Students can renew the
scholarship for up to three
more years if they meet
certain academic standards.

• Athens, down 110, or 15.5
percent, from 710 to 600.
• Atlanta, up 46, or two-
tenths of one percent, from
19,249 to 19,295.
• Augusta, down 92, or 6.3
percent, from 1,454 to 1,362.
• Brunswick, up 67, or 17
percent, from 395 to 462.
• Columbus, up 22, or 2.9
percent, from 758 to 780.
• Dalton, down 588, or
24.7 percent, from 2,377 to
1,789.
• Gainesville, up 14, or 2.2
percent, from 630 to 644.
• Hinesville, up five, or 3.1
percent, from 159 to 164.
• Macon, down 85, or 7.1
percent, from 1,189 to 1,104.
• Rome, down 237, or 31.1
percent, from 762 to 525.
• Savannah, up 385, or 40.3
