Home Country
By Slim Randles
By the time we saw Dud,
of course, the damage had
been done.
It was Steve who spoke
first.
“I don’t believe it,” the
tall cowboy said.
We all turned then, and
the full impact of the deed
struck us almost simulta
neously. There, on Dud’s
head, was a sculpture of
such blasphemous propor
tions as would silence all
of us in attendance at the
Mule Barn truck stop’s
philosophy counter and
world dilemma think tank.
It was beautiful, of course,
but it was also tragic.
“They call it feathered,”
said Dud, turning red. “A
razor cut.”
We just stared at the hair
cut without saying any
thing. It curved gracefully
around his ears, it waved
softly in sculptured layers
over the top of his head.
It fell in gradually decreas
ing thicknesses down the
long back slope of his head
toward its tapered termina
tion at the neck.
“It was Anita’s idea,”
Dud said. “She gave me
the money for it and every
thing.”
Finally, Doc spoke.
“What’s Kelly going to
say?”
“That’s the worst of it, all
right,” Dud said. “I know
he’s going to be hurt.”
Kelly hadn’t really wor
ried too much about the
future of his barbershop
when Fantasy Fantails set
up shop. He assumed it
was a haircutting place for
women who didn’t want to
take the time to go to the
beauty parlor, and for guys
who came to live in our
small town from the city.
Kelly’s has always been
the stronghold of local
manhood. The magazines
had nothing to do with
decorating a house or
how your investments are
working out. The maga
zines had everything to
do with what kind of bait
to use on catfish and how
big an engine your pickup
needed to pull a large boat.
You wouldn’t find a single
advertisement showing
a guy wearing a sweater
tied around his neck. Not
at Kelly’s. In the past,
when magazines were
magazines, you could read
how some guy captured
Gestapo headquarters with
his headhunter brides.
“Well,” said Doc, shrug
ging. “That haircut of
yours is a work of art,
without a doubt. But
there’s at least one good
thing about getting a really
expensive haircut. Dud.
Sooner or later, it’ll grow
out.”

Commissioners Consider
Options For Old Leslie Road
During the Lee County
Commission meeting
Tuesday, November 9, the
Lee County commission
ers heard three options
from Mike Sistrunk,
Public Works Director, for
putting material on Old
Leslie Road. For sev
eral months, citizens that
reside on dirt roads have
requested that the com
missioners improve the
condition of their roads.
Mr. Sistrunk explained
the three options that
would improve the condi
tion of Old Leslie Road
starting at New York Road
and extending one and
one-tenth mile.
Option one would
involve applying crushed
asphalt which cost
$24.50 a ton. Since 4,000
tons would be needed,
the asphalt would cost
$98,000.00. Labor cost for
a five man crew would be
$16,000.00. Fuel would
cost $5,300.00 for haul
ing 277 loads of rock.
The road department
would have to use a motor
grader, three dump trucks,
water truck and roller to
complete the project. The
estimated cost for option
one would be $119,300.
Option two would
involve applying crushed
granite rock at a price of
$22.50 a ton for a cost
of $90,000.00. The labor
and fuel cost would be
the same as the first op
tion. Option two would
be somewhat less at an
expense of $111,300.00.
Option 3 which consists
of paving the one and
one-tenth mile would be
$700,000.00.
Option one of applying
crushed asphalt would last
two to three years. Option
two would last five years.
Paving the road would be
more expensive but would
last longer.
The commissioners
heard an annual update
on the impact fee use
plan. The commissioners
approved the transmittal
resolution for the plan to
be submitted to South
west Georgia Regional
Commission for both the
regional and state review.
The commissioners ap
proved a 50 - 50 matching
grant for the Emergency
Management Center lo
cated at the sheriff’s office
in the muster room. The
$10,000 grant, which is
matched by Lee County, is
to upgrade the command
center. The grant fund
will be used to purchase
needed equipment for the
command center in case of
emergencies.
The commissioners
approved a resolution re
questing the department of
transportation to establish
an alternate truck route
for Highway 32 that would
improve safety and reduce
congestion in downtown
Leesburg. Lee County is
requesting the department
of transportation to install
signage for an alternate
truck route.
Currently Highway
32 brings truck traf
fic through the center
of Leesburg and causes
unnecessary congestion,
especially at peak traf
fic times. The alternate
route would use Lovers
Land and Robert B. Lee to
Highway 19.
Lee County residents
will see an increase next
month in their monthly
statements from Media-
corn. Basic service will
increase two dollars from
$23.00 to $25.00, ex
panded basic will increase
one dollar from $37.95 to
$38.95 and total family
cable will increase $3.00
from $60.95 to $63.95.
Lee County was in
formed by Crisp County
Solid Waste Management
Authority that rate will
be increased following a
60 day notice due to an
increase in cost of fuel.
Crisp County Solid Waste
Management Authority
provides waste collection,
transportation and dis
posal service for several
local governments.
