Special to the Ledger
Georgia Southwestern
State University (GSW) has
officially set a new record
enrollment with 3,037 stu
dents. That is an increase of
134 students, or 4.6 percent,
over the fall 2009 enroll
ment, which at the time
was the record. Georgia
Southwestern’s new record
enrollment pushes its over
all growth to 26 percent

“Enrollment growth has
never been more important
to Georgia Southwestern
as we work to adjust to
the challenges posed by
the recent decline of our
state appropriation,’’ said
GSW President Kendall
A. Blanchard, Ph.D. “Our
continued growth says a lot
about the skills of our fac
ulty, the talents of our staff,
the efforts of our retirees
and the commitment of the
larger community that sup
ports us.’’
Chancellor Erroll B.
Davis Jr. announced the
figures today, as the Uni
versity System of Georiga
(USG) released its 2010
Fall Enrollment Report.
The report provides data
on enrollment by institu
tion, by gender, by race and
ethnicity, and breaks down
students by class (freshmen,
sophomore, etc.) and in-
state/out-of-state. The USG
grew by 3.2 percent (9,550
students) from fall 2009
to fall 2010, now totaling
311,442 students.
GSW had significant
gains in new freshmen - a
4.8 percent increase from
fall 2009. Southwestern has
increased by 18 percent in
new freshmen - since fall
2007. The number of total
undergraduates increased
this year by 7 percent.
In particular, Georgia
Southwestern’s 4.6 percent
increase was greater than
the two regional universities
(Georgia Southern Uni
versity and Valdosta State
University) who grew an
average of 3.5 percent. The
state universities only grew
at an average of 2.5 percent.

Special to the Ledger
Androcles and the Lion,
by Nobel Prize and Acad
emy Award winning Irish
playwright George Bernard
Shaw, is Sumter Players
upcoming production at the
Rylander Theatre. Co-pro-
duced with GSW’s Dra
matic Arts Department, the
classic of English literature
will be presented onstage
with 8:00 pm performances
on November 18,19 and 20
with a 2:30 pm matinee on
Sunday, November 21.
As do many of Shaw’s
plays, Androcles and the
Lion addresses a social
issue of his time (late 19th
and early 20th centuries)
using comedy to smooth
the rough edges of some
stark themes. In attacking
the hypocrisy prevalent in
some religious practices
Shaw retells the ancient
story of the slave Androcles
whose removal of a thorn
from a lion’s paw results
in the lion’s later saving
him from death in Rome’s
Circus Maximus. Shaw
incarnates Androcles as an
early Christian being led
to the Coliseum for torture

Many productions of
Androcles and the Lion
pair it with another short
play and Sumter Players is
following that tradition by
presenting a Youth Theater
production of a set of come
dic little playlets gathered
under the name of Lion
and Mouse Stories and tied
together by a very clever
mouse telling the stories
to a very arrogant Lion to
avoid being eaten. Stories
include The Brahman and
the Jackal about a clever
