Head Start Awareness
National recognition is given to the
Head Start Programs within our com
munities this month. National Head Start
Awareness Month is acknowledged to
educate those individuals that are un
aware of such programs and the overall
educational value to the families, as well
as the children, enrolled in the program.
Head Start is a
Federal program
for preschool
children from
low-income
families. Our
local program
is sponsored by
Southwest Geor
gia Community
Action Council,
Inc. - a non
profit organiza
tion located in
Moultrie, Ga.
Children who attend Head Start partici
pate in a variety of educational activities
that help them grow mentally, socially,
emotionally, and physically. They also
receive medical and dental care, have
healthy meals and snacks and enjoy play
ing outdoors in a safe setting. If a parent
meets the eligibility requirements and
the child is accepted into the program,
there will be no cost to the parent. Head
Start helps all children succeed. Services
are offered to meet the special needs of
children with disabilities. Our local Head
Start program offers services for children
from the ages of three to five years old.
Head Start staff encourage all parents
of enrolled children to participate in the
program by volunteering. The staff use
a wide variety of educational methods -
including local community resources- to
assist parents
in the areas of
child develop
ment, family
partnership,
education,
health, nutri
tion, disabili
ties, mental
health, dental
health, and
transportation.
Parents may
also have a
voice in the
program by serving on various commit
tees.
If you know of anyone who would ben
efit from the services our local Head Start
program offers, please call 759-2559
and ask to speak to the CenterSupervi-
sor, Mrs. Terry Parker, or Family Service
Worker, Mrs. Brooks. (The center is
located behind the Ninth Grade Academy
on Groover Street in Leesburg. The name
of the center is the Lee County Child De
velopment Center - Head Start program.)

LCMS FCA Giving to Others
The LCMS Fellowship of Christian Athletes, sponsored by Coaches
Chris Morton, Sandra Boyd, and Dwayne Suggs, recently participated
in a canned food drive to assist families through the Lee County
Department of Family and Children’s Services. These food items will
be distributed to a number of families for their Thanksgiving meals.
Thanks to these students for their donations.
