Smithville Community
Building Guidelines Discussed
During the Smithville
City Council Thursday,
November 18, John Word,
Chairman of the Down
town Development Author
ity, presented Mayor Jerry
Myrick and the council
with a proposed list of
guidelines for the op
eration of the Community
Building. Construction on
the building is progress
ing and will be available
for use after the first of the
year.
The focus of the discus
sion centered on the han
dling of the rent and the
cleanup and maintenance
of the building. Mr. Word
presented the council with
copies of the proposed
rules and rental agreement.
The Downtown Develop
ment Authority emphaized
that the rules should spec
ify what type of events
including weddings, family
reunions, birthdays, church
events, and professional
events that can be hosted at
the community building.
If alcohol is to be served
at the event, the Downtown
Development Authority
(DDA) and the council
agreed that the lessee
will pay an off duty law
enforcement officer to be at
the event.
The council agreed that
city employees will over
see the cleanup and moving
of tables and chairs to meet
the need of the lessee.
Members of the DDA
will serve as the contact
point for anyone wishing
to lease the building. In
addition to the rental fee,
a deposit will be required
. If the building is left in a
satisfactory condition the
deposit will be returned.
The city attorney will
review the proposed rules
for leasing the community
building and advise the
council before a final deci
sion is made.
During the meeting, the
council discussed setting
qualifying fees for the po
sition of mayor and council
members. The qualifying
fee is based upon the salary
of the position. For several
years the qualifying fee for
council members is $15
and the qualifying fee for
mayor is $35. The council
will set the fee at their
next meeting.
