Daffodils will provide annual flowering year
after year with only minimal care.
Plant Daffodils and Other
Narcissus This Fall
Fall is a great time to
plant daffodils and other
narcissus bulbs, including
paperwhites and jonquils.
These bulbs are relatively
inexpensive and are easy
to plant. They can easily
provide a lifetime (perhaps
longer) of beautiful spring
flower displays with mini
mal care.
There are different
strategies for planting
narcissus bulbs. They can
be planted in beds, either
in rows or scattered. They
can be naturalized in
wooded areas in the land
scape. They can be natu
ralized in wooded areas in
the landscape. They can
even be concentrated in
mass plantings.
Plant them at the recom
mended depth and spac
ing. These are often listed
on the package in which
the bulbs are purchased.
This information can also
be found in reference
books and in the Univer
sity of Georgia Extension
publication “Flowering
Bulbs For Georgia Gar
dens”. Remember to plant
the pointed end of the bulb
up.
A pH of 6.0 to 6.8 is best
for most bulbs. A general
purpose fertilizer such as
10-10-10 is a good choice
for narcissus bulbs. Apply
at a rate of one to two
pounds per 100 square
feet. If you are going to
till the soil before planting
anyway, till the fertilizer
into the soil before plant
ing. Otherwise, apply it
to the soil surface after
planting. Narcissus bulbs
should be planted from
October through Decem
ber.
Narcissus bulbs will
provide decades of flower
ing. I have seen colonies
of narcissus plants that
were thriving many years
after a home site had
been abandoned. Under
anything approaching the
right conditions, narcissus
bulbs will multiply into a
large clump of bulbs.

ering Bulbs For Georgia
Gardens” can be picked up

then typing “Flower
ing Bulbs For Georgia
Gardens” in the search
box (the one by “GO” in
the green square) on the
