Mel Brooks Movie Night at Rylander Theater
Special to the Ledger
The Friends of the
Rylander Theatre pres
ent Mel Brooks Movie
Night featuring: History
of the World, Part I and
Young Frankenstein
Saturday, September 11
at 7 pm at the Rylander
Theatre, Downtown
Americus.
The Friends of the
Rylander Theatre pres
ent a Double Feature
of laughs. Two of Mel
Brooks’ most loved—
and most irreverent-
comedies shown back to
back in a historic theatre
setting, “History of
the World, Part 1” and
“Young Frankenstein.”
Both films typify the
witty and bawdy humor
for which director Mel
Brooks is known. In
“History of the World,
Part 1” Brooks attempts
to cover the history of
mankind from the dawn
of time and the Old
Testament to the French
Revolution in a series
of comedy vignettes.
Known for its star-
studded cast, the film
features Brooks himself
in several roles, Gregory
Hines, Dom DeLuise,
and Harvey Korman.
While “Young Franken
stein,” starring Gene
Wilder and Madeline
Kahn, is the hilarious
story of the American
grandson of the infa
mous Dr. Frankenstein.
The younger Franken
stein is invited to Tran
sylvania and struggles to
shake off the stigma of
his family name. While
there he discovers the
process to reanimate a
corpse and does so—
along with teaching it to
sing and dance as well.
History of the World,
Part 1 begins at 7 pm
followed by a brief
intermission and Young
Frankenstein immedi
ately after on Saturday,
September 10, 2016.
The bar and concessions
will be open for patrons
during this event. Both
films are Rated R and
are not intended for
young audiences.

You can spot ‘Lime
Sizzler’ firebush in a
landscape from a mile
away! Well, that may be
a slight exaggeration, but
the new ‘Lime Sizzler’
definitely grabs atten
tion. Ever since firebush
was declared a Texas
Superstar winner 20
years ago, it has captured
the fancy of gardeners,
hummingbirds, butter
flies and bees. Now with
the addition of ‘Lime
Sizzler,’ gardeners have
gone gaga.
Botanically speaking,
‘Lime Sizzler’ is known
as Hamelia patens and
is native everywhere
from South Florida to
the West Indies, Mexico
and Central America. It
was actually discovered
at a nursery in South
Texas, and the plant was
then patented. It is so
exotic and showy that
it seems that the entire
green industry wants it in
its product line, includ
ing the Southern Living
Plant Collection.
The shocking green
and yellow foliage would
probably be enough to
make gardeners desire
the plant, but add the
trumpet-shaped, red-
orange flower so loved by
pollinators, and it’s really
more than a plant geek
like me can stand. I’ll be
honest, though — I have
never met a firebush I
didn’t like.
‘Lime Sizzler’ is more
compact, in the 4-by-4-
foot range. Across most
of the country, it will be
grown as an annual and,
truthfully, it’s a most
worthy value for your
gardening dollar. The
firebush, which is also
called “hummingbird
bush” and “scarlet bush,”
is related to coffee,
gardenia and the colorful

ixora. Technically, it is a
zones-9-to-ll plant, but
will return most years in
zone 8. Here in Savannah
and the low country, it is
a trooper.
In the University of
Georgia Coastal Botani
cal Gardens, ours are 4
to 6 feet and, indeed,
have attained that
shrubby look, even after
dying to the ground. Our
‘Lime Sizzlers’ were
planted late this spring
from 1-gallon containers
and are now 2 feet by 2
feet. Even at this size, I
can spot them across the
garden.
In addition to the ‘Lime
Sizzler,’ we grow the
typical green form and
several plants of the
‘Firefly’ variety. ‘Fire
fly’ firebush has smaller
leaves and more yellow
showing in the blossoms.
We also grow the ‘Ba
hama’ firebush, Hamelia
cuprea, that has glossy
leaves and much larger
flowers, almost reminis
cent of an esperanza or
tecoma, but more bell
shaped.
When the torrid
temperatures of August
arrive, many gardeners
look for plants that are
as tough as nails when
it comes to heat and
drought conditions. I am
happy to say that the fire
bush fits the bill. Once
established, it is very
heat and drought tolerant
and will grow in almost
any well-drained soil.

Starting school in September would likely
reduce hot bus concerns by about 90% and save
many thousands in the cost of operating air con
ditioners in school buildings.
Hillary Clinton is so corrupt, she's even too cor
rupt for Washington. The Clinton Foundation is
a shameless political machine. What she did was
turn the State Department into a fundraising
racket of the Clinton for President campaign for
four years.
Let your light shine before others, that they
may see your good deeds and glorify your Father
in heaven. Matt. 5:16
If you hear a sucking noise this month don't
fret, it's money dumped into the federal year-
end spending machine. Leading the charge locally
is the Marine Base, spending like it fights—with
great vigor. Wouldn't be as bad if so much wasn't
wasted and it wasn't borrowed money.
See a request to rezone 21 acres near the new

I thought we wanted enhanced commercial not
make it easier to build more houses. Why did we
build the road?
Decided Hermine was a Democrat, promising
a lot and delivering little. A couple of inches of
rain would have been real nice.
A recent comment stated that Obama wants a
federalized police force. It is worse than that, He
has declared that conservatives are "extremists"
and "terrorists". He wants a United Nation police
force in America to combat these conservatives
"terrorists"!
Valdosta State gets a $2 million grant to provide
"full ride" scholarships to children of migrants.
Wish my citizen children could get some of that.
Think folks in the big cities pay big property
taxes? Think again. Cobb County seniors don't
pay any school tax. How much do you pay?
The word of life is Jesus. 1 John 1:1
An argument for SPLOST is all pay—rich and
poor, legal and illegal, welfare or not. This is
exactly the argument made for the Fair Tax.
Eliminate income and other taxes and take away
politician's ability to reward friends and punish
enemies.
How many of the school board members rode a
bus for a week?
Parents of students riding the bus where the
deputy was involved with the "disruptive" student
should demand the school system and sheriff's
office inform the public of any findings. It is time
for everyone to be held accountable including
"disruptive" students.
I am thankful the bad weather passed us by.
Why was new buses and air conditioners not
ordered for the start of school? Where is the
priority for the children's welfare.
Lee County citizens attend the next commission
meeting and tell them that we do not want to out
source emercemcy 911. We should take care of
our own health, life and welfare.

LCMS West students would like to thank the PTO volunteers, teachers
and administration for a wonderful “Back to School Dance” held on
August 26. The gym was decorated with neon lights and students
dance to the beat of D.J. Juwan Wilson. Students enjoyed the door
prizes, dance contests, photo booth, and the concessions.
