Wash hands well when visiting
fairs, petting zoos and festivals
Special to the Ledger
By Judy A. Harrison
UGA Extension
It is the time of year
for visiting pumpkin
patches, fall festivals
and Christmas tree
farms. Many of these
venues have petting
zoos and sell food
products - a combina
tion that is a potential
health risk if proper
hand washing isn’t
included.
Visiting a petting
zoo can be a memo
rable family outing,
but the facts are that
petting zoos and farms
can be a source of
E. coli transmission.
The CDC warns that
“when people forget to
wash their hands after
petting an animal, or
bring food or drinks
into an area where
animals are exhibited,
they are at risk for
becoming ill.”
University of Geor
gia Cooperative Ex
tension advises parents
and teachers to help
keep children safe by
following these rec
ommendations from
the CDC:
Visit hand wash
ing stations at petting
zoos, festival locations
and farms.
Always make sure
that children wash
their hands right after
petting animals or
touching pens, cages,
etc., where animals
are housed.
Even if children do
not touch the animals,
they should wash their
hands after exiting the
animal holding areas.
Always wash hands
before touching food
or drinking, before
preparing food or
drinks, and after re
moving soiled clothing
or shoes after visiting
farms or petting zoos.
Keep food and
drinks out of areas
where animals are
held.
Prepare, serve and
eat food only in areas
where animals are not
permitted.
Do not eat or drink
raw, unpasteurized
juices, cider, milk or
cheeses.
Constantly supervise
children less than 5
years of age while in
animal holding areas.
Do not allow chil
dren to put thumbs,
fingers, pacifiers or
other objects in their
mouths while in the
animal areas.
Do not take strollers,
bottles, pacifiers, cups
or toys into animal
areas.
Supervise children’s
hand washing.
According to the
CDC, hand washing
with soap and running
water is best. Hands
should be washed
with soap and running
water for at least 20
seconds. Pay special
attention to the area
between fingers and
around fingernails.
If these are unavail
able, use hand sanitiz
ers, but wash hands
well as soon as a sink

PUBLIC MEETING
The Lee County Utilities Authority hereby gives notice that a Public Meet
ing will be held to discuss a wastewater improvement project funded by Geor
gia’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF) on November 29, 2016 at
5:00 P.M. in the Page Tharp Government Building, Opal Cannon Auditorium
at 102 Starksville Avenue North, Leesburg, GA 31763.
This proposed project includes the construction of a 350 KW Solar Array
located at the Kinchafoonee Wastewater Treatment Plant to lower the electri
cal cost at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The anticipated cost of the project
is $997,500.00.
The purposes of the public meeting are to:
1) Inform the public of the need for improvements to the Authority’s
wastewater system.
2) To comply with Section 391-3-6-.02 of Georgia’s Water Quality
Control Rules (and amendments thereto).
3) To encourage public involvement in the development of a plan to
improve the wastewater system.
During the Public Meeting the Authority will attempt to identify public
preferences for alternative methods of improving the Authority’s wastewater
facilities. These alternative will be evaluated and included in the Authority’s
Facilities Planning and Environmental Review Document, the major planning
document covering the wastewater system, Energy Conservation, Efficiency
and Production. These documents are available for public inspection through
the date of the public meeting at 105 Main Street, Leesburg, GA 31763 during
normal business hours.
Your participation is encouraged and considered essential to the selection
and development of the final plan to be adopted prior to its approval by the
State of Georgia, Department of Natural Resources.
