Inter-Veinal Chlorosis
on Acid Loving Plants
Doug Collins, Lee County
Extension Coordinator
Putting knowledge toWorlSI
Yellowing in between the veins on azalea and
blueberry leaves is a sign of micronutrient
deficiency, usually caused by a soil pH that
is too high.
Not all plants require
the same soil pH. While
most of our row crops
and garden vegetables
thrive in a soil with a
pH of 6.0 to 6.5, some
plants need a lower pH.
Azaleas and blueberries
are plants that require a
substantially lower pH.
Azaleas grow best at a
pH of 4.5 to 6.0. Blue
berries grow best in a
soil pH of 4.5 to 5.2.
These plants require
higher levels of micro
nutrients. These micro
nutrients, also known as
microelements, are avail
able to plants at lower
soil pH levels (lower pH
means the soil is more
acidic—high pH means
the soil is more alkaline).
A deficiency of micro
nutrients in these plants
manifests itself as inter-
veinal chlorosis in the
leaves, along with plant
stunting, reduced pro
ductivity, and a general
lack of thriftiness in the
plant. Interveinal chloro
sis is yellowing between
the veins in the leaf.
The micronutrient defi
ciency is usually brought
about not because the
micronutrients are not
in the soil, but because
the pH is so high that the
plant cannot access the
micronutrients that are
in the soil.
There is a solution to
this problem. Sulfur can
be added to the soil to
lower the pH. If your
blueberries or azaleas
exhibit interveinal
chlorosis, I recommend
taking a soil sample for
analysis and following
the recommendation on
the soil test results.

Lighthouse Children’s Advocacy Center Earns
Accreditation From National Children’s Alliance
Special to the Ledger
Lighthouse CAC has
been awarded accredita
tion by National Chil
dren’s Alliance following
an extensive application
and site review process.
As the accrediting agency
for Children’s Advocacy
Centers (CAC) across the
country, National Chil
dren’s Alliance awards
various levels of accredi
tation and membership
to centers responding to
allegations of child abuse
in ways that are effective
and efficient, and put the
needs of child victims
of abuse first. Accredita
tion is the highest level of
membership with Na
tional Children’s Alliance
and denotes excellence in
service provision.
Lighthouse CAC was
founded in October 2012.
The center has received
an outpouring of com
munity and agency
support over the last four
years and has served
hundreds of suspected
child abuse victims and
their families in the
Southwestern Judicial
Circuit (Lee, Sumter,
Schley, Macon, Webster
and Stewart counties). As
an Accredited Member of
National Children’s Al
liance, Lighthouse CAC
is dedicated to providing
comprehensive, coordi
nated and compassionate
services to victims of
child abuse.
National Children’s Al
liance awards Accredited
Membership based on a
CAC’s compliance with
10 national standards of
accreditation to ensure
effective, efficient and
consistent delivery of
services to child abuse
victims. National Chil
dren’s Alliance updated
these standards in 2010
to reflect the most recent
evidence-based practices
in the field of child abuse
intervention and preven
tion. According to these
standards, Accredited
Members must utilize a
functioning and effec
tive Multidisciplinary
Team approach to work
collaboratively in child
abuse investigation, pros
ecution, and treatment.
National Children’s
Alliance also considers
standards regarding a
center’s cultural com
petency and diversity,
forensic interviews, vic
tim support and advo
cacy, medical evaluation,
therapeutic intervention,
and child focused setting.
“As a team of individu
als dedicated to respond
ing to child abuse, we
recognize the importance
of accreditation from
National Children’s Alli
ance and supporting the
Multidisciplinary Team
approach. We are very
fortunate to work with
an amazing multidisci
plinary team of profes
sionals in our six county
region, dedicated to child
protection. Accreditation
not only validates our
organization’s proven
effective approach to
responding to allegations
of child abuse, but also
provides consistency
across the child advo
cacy center movement
as a whole,” said Amy
Boney, Lighthouse CAC
Director.
“Lighthouse CAC is
to be commended for its
excellent work serving
victims of child abuse.
As the national associa
tion and accrediting body
for Children’s Advocacy
Centers across the coun
try, our goal is to ensure
that every victim of child
abuse has access to high
quality services that
result from professional
collaboration,” remarked
Teresa Huizar, Execu
tive Director of National
Children’s Alliance.
