Thespians Support Local Food Programs

The Thespian Society’s
Troupe #5297 at Lee
County High School
recently presented more
than $1600 to local char
ities to combat hunger.
As part of the annual
“Trick-or-Treat So Kids
Can Eat” campaign,
coordinated by the
International Thespian
Society, Lee County’s
troupe raised enough
money to purchase more
than 8,000 pounds of
food and gave the col
lected funds to Leesburg
Lirst United Methodist
Church’s Lood Pantry
and the Lee County
Kiwanis Club’s Back
pack Blessings program.
Elaine Ruckel, repre
senting the Methodist
Church Lood Pantry, and
Patsy Shirley, represent
ing the Backpack Bless
ings program, accepted
the contributions from
members of the Thes
pian Society last week at
LCHS. Ruckel indicated
that the money would
be essential to the Lood
Pantry’s effort to assist
local families during the
upcoming Thanksgiving
holiday. Shirley ex
plained that the Back
pack Blessings program
will use the funds to
continue its work provid
ing food resources to an
ever-increasing number
of needy children in the
area, children who get
their only regular meals
from school lunch pro
grams and need supple
mentary food resources
after school and on
weekends.
The Thespian Soci
ety is the high school
honor society for theatre
arts students founded
in 1929. Lee County’s
Thespian Troupe has
more than 20 mem
bers currently, and has
inducted more than 350
students since it received
its charter in 1994. The
current president of Lee
County’s Troupe #5297
is Skyler Glass, a senior
who serves at the state
level as Thespian officer.
The annual “Trick-or-

campaign encourages
Thespian troupes around
the world to support
their local food pro
grams by collecting food
and money around Hal
loween. hollowing the
curtain call for recent
performances of “The
Magic Tree House,”
Lee County’s Thespians
invited audience mem
bers to make donations
during the “Minute to
Give It,” passing collec
tion buckets through the
audience in a 60-second
mad dash for donations.
The Lee County troupe
also invited audiences
to support their effort
at recent performances
of their one-act musical
“All American.” The cast
solicited donations after
each performance. Lee
County’s troupe has par
ticipated in the “Trick-
or-Treat” event for five
consecutive years, col
lecting more than 30,000
pounds of food for local
families in need.

Tharp
Retires
From Postal
Service
Tommy Tharp
recently retired from
his position as a
mail carrier with the
Leesburg Post Office.
Tommy ended his
carrier with the local
post office after 37
years of delivering
the mail on several of
the different routes.
Before joining the
post office, he was
employed by the
Lee County School
System as a teacher.
Tommy plans to enjoy
his retirement by
fishing and hunting.
He was wished a fond
farewell by his many
friends of 20 plus
years.
