Young Girls Held In Leesburg Stockade
In 1963, approximately 20 girls were jailed in the one room Leesburg Stockade for 45 days
for their part in integrating a movie theater in Americus during the Civil Rights protests. “We
were protesting as children,” said Shirley Reese, a former Americus City Council member
and educator.

Special to the Ledger
On Friday, September
27, 2019, the Georgia
Historical Society will
join the Lee County
Board of Education to
unveil a Georgia His
torical Marker at the
Leesburg Stockade.
The Historical Marker
will be placed at the
stockade in Leesburg,
GA to commemorate the
events and individuals of
the Civil Rights Move
ment.
In July 1963, a group
of adolescent African
American girls were
incarcerated in the Lee
County Stockade fol
lowing arrest during the
Civil Rights Movement.
The girls were held in
a single cell lacking
proper plumbing, run
ning water, bedding, and
sanitary supplies. Their
families were not ini
tially told their location,
and the girls never faced
formal charges. They
would spend the major
ity of the summer locked
in the sweltering cell.
The girls’ plight was
eventually captured
and shared through the
photography of Danny
Lyon of the Student
Nonviolent Coordinat
ing Committee (SNCC).
SNCC’s distribution of
Danny Lyon’s photos
in Jet magazine and
the SNCC newsletter,
Student Voice, led to the
girls’ eventual release in
mid-September 1963.
Speakers for the cer
emony include: WALB’s
Karla Heath-Sands,
Leesburg Mayor Jim
Quinn, Albany Mayor
Dorothy Hubbard, Dr.

as an advocate for the
school systems, its stu

The Georgia TOTY’s
numerous engagements
usually include recogni

throughout the state.
This teacher representa
tive also conducts staff
development activities
for other teachers in his
or her area of expertise,
serves on statewide
committees, attends and
participates in numerous
state conferences.
We are fortunate to
have these exception
