“Though He slay me,
yet will I trust in Him.”(-
Job 13:15) What could
provoke a man to say
such a thing concerning
his relationship
with God? Was
this blasphemy
or an exceptional
assertion of faith
in God? Let’s
consider the
man.
Job was one
of the richest
men in the world
during his time.
The book of Job lists the
litany of his wealth. He
also had a large family
which would propagate
the legacy with “heirs
and spares.” He was not
a king but an entrepre
neur who “was blame
less and upright, and
one who feared God and
shunned evil.”(Job 1:1)
He had a great testimo
ny. He was living a god
ly life, and if you don’t
believe that, just look at
all the stuff he had. Or
maybe. . .
“Then the Lord said
to Satan, ‘Have you
considered my servant
Job, that there is none
like him on the earth, a
blameless and upright
man, one who fears
God and shuns evil?’ So
Satan answered the Lord
and said, ‘Does Job fear
God for nothing? Have
You not made a hedge
around him, around his
household, and around
all that he has on every
side? You have blessed
the work of his hands,
and his possessions have
increased in the land.
But now, stretch out
Your hand and touch all
that he has, and he will
surely curse You to Your
face!’ And the Lord said
to Satan, ‘Behold, all
that he has is in your
power; only do not lay a
hand on his person.’ So
Satan went out from the
presence of the Lord.”(-
Job 1:8-12)
If you don’t know the
story, Job lost it all.
He did not curse God.
Satan was then given
the power to afflict Job’s
body. Job stood firm in
his testimony of God’s
character and didn‘t
accept responsibility for
sin Job didn‘t commit.
Satan wanted to steal
God’s joy by
defaming this
man in whom
God took so
much pleasure.
He wanted to
show Job was
shallow and
in it for the
health, wealth
and prosperity
of it. Satan’s
allegation was if those
things were taken from
Job, God would be
exposed as a mere Sugar
Daddy.
“Then his wife said to
him, ‘Do you still hold
fast to your integrity?
Curse God and die!”(-
Job 2:9) Job’s friends
accused him of having
secret sins. Everybody
knows “bad things don’t
happen to good people.”
I know an African
man who lost his wife
because he became a
Christian. Her Muslim
family came and took
her away. I had the privi
lege of baptizing him. I
know another African
man who believes Jesus
is the Savior but won’t
accept Him as Lord
because he would lose
his wives and his father
would cut him out of any
inheritance. He would
also lose his influence as
a member of the Chief’s
Council.
Material wealth is
not necessarily a result
of following Christ.
Sometimes it is neces
sarily forfeited. During
these politically stressed
times, who do you want
to take the glory for
your responses, God or
Satan? Your “friends”
may not be as spiritual
as they suppose. What
kind of friend do I want
to be? “’Rabbi, who
sinned, this man or his
parents, that he was born
blind?’ Jesus answered,
‘Neither this man nor his
parents sinned, but that
the works of God should
be revealed in him.’”(-
John 9:2-3)
