Board Of Education
Approves Additional
Resource Officers
During their meet
ing Monday, June 13,
the board of education
members approved the
funding of resource
officers with the City of
Leesburg for the 2022-23
school year. The funding
included two new po
sitions for a total of six
school resource officers.
The increase will be
$115,086.04. The ad
ditional cost for the
officers will be paid with
ESSER funds grant for
the next school term and
will have no budget
ary impact. After next
year, the school system
will have the option of
retaining these services
or funding them locally.
The board will consider
at next month’s meeting
adding two additional
school resource office
thus having one at each
school. The school sys
tem is currently paying
approximately 80% of
the cost for the officers.

Mrs. JoAnn Wells
Collins, 86 of Leesburg,
GA, died Wednesday,
June 8, 2022 at her
residence. A graveside
funeral service was held
Monday, June 13, 2022
at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Pastor Bruce English
officiated.
Mrs. Collins was born
April 28, 1936 in Car-
tersville, GA, daughter
of the late Thurman
Wells and Maude Biddy
Wells. She was co-own
er of Collins Business
Machines along with
her husband Bobby
until they retired. She
loved her family and
enjoyed hosting many
family reunions. She
loved her grandchildren
and great-grandchildren
and spending time with
family and friends. She
was a wonderful cook
and loved working in
her yard. Other than her
parents she was also
preceded in death by her
husband Bobby Ray Col
lins, five brothers James
Pruiett, Renon Pruiett,
Eval Pruiett, Edward
Wells and Charles Wells
and three sisters Chris
tine Wells, Carol Byrd
and Eloise Crook.
She is survived by her
daughters Cindy Col
lins Holton (David) of
Camilla, GA and Amy
Collins Reno (Wayne) of
Albany, GA, her sister
Betty Jean Tucker of
Baconton, GA, grand
children Mandy Holton
Deloach, of Camilla,
GA and Jason Gauntt
(Jennifer) of Alabama,
great-grandchildren

Dalton Deloach of Ca
milla, GA, Peter Gauntt,

GSW students selected for President
Jimmy Carter Leadership Program

Georgia Southwestern
State University (GSW)
has named eighteen in
coming freshmen to the
President Jimmy Carter
Leadership Program,
established to honor the
legacy of GSW alum
nus and former U.S.
President Jimmy Carter.
These students from
Georgia, Florida and
South Carolina are the
fourth group to enter
the program since its
creation in 2019.
“I am excited to see
how this dynamic and
diverse group of stu
dents comes in and
impacts the program,
the University, and the
community with their
passion for and commit
ment to leadership and
service,” said Mikela
Barlow, interim coordi
nator for the President
Jimmy Carter Lead
ership Program. “The
newest cohort members
were selected through
an application and inter
view process. The group
commits to program re
quirements that include
a two-year residency,
240 service hours, a
leadership certificate,
and a senior research or
service project. It is an
honor for me to work
with these future lead
ers in this prestigious
program.”

The program consists
of two pathways, an
Undergraduate Research
Track and a Service
Track, that exemplify
Carter’s lifetime of
leadership in education,
politics and community
service. Guided by the
evidence-based “The
Social Change Model
of Leadership Devel
opment,” the four-year
Carter Leadership Pro
gram allows students to
develop their leadership
skills both individually
and within a group.
Students who score
a minimum 1100 on
the SAT or an ACT
composite score of
22, hold a high school
curriculum grade point
average of 3.0 or greater
and have been admitted
to GSW are eligible to
apply for the program.
Additionally, students
who hold a leadership
role in high school,
whether on a sports
team, a student club, or
community organiza
tion, also qualify.
