Exhibit She Gathers Me on Display at Leesburg Library
Special to the Ledger
By Edie Cohen, Library
Assistant, Lee County
Library
Six vividly colored and
thoughtfully laid out
banners comprise the
exhibit She Gathers Me:
Networks Among Black
Women Writers, cur
rently on display at the
Leesburg Library through
July 18 th.
The exhibit, touring the
State through a partner
ship between the Stuart
A. Rose Manuscript,
Archives, and Rare Book
Library at Emory Uni
versity and the Georgia
Public Library Service,
provides a glimpse into
the early lives of Black
women writers and
the intimate bonds and
profoundly supportive
relationships they shared
with one another.
Organized around four
themes - Collective,
Sister Writers, Dialogue,
and Remembrance - the
exhibit uses archival
material such as letters,
journals, calendars, and
photographs to present
the narrative of the ways
in which these women
built community with one
another, supported each
other’s work, engaged
in dialogue with one an
other, and memorialized
the contributions of the
women who came before
them..
Seen through the lens
of this material, viewers
witness the ways writers
seek community with
one another that may
not always be apparent
through published works.
Gabrielle M. Dudley,
Rose Library’s Instruc
tion Archivist, said that
“while close friendships
can be seen throughout,
viewers will also see how
these women respectfully
challenged and shaped
each other’s ideas and
perspectives.”
Alice Walker, Audre
Lorde, Pearl Cleage,
Tayari Jones, Toni Mor
rison, and Lucille Clifton
are among the literary
luminaries featured in the
exhibit, and some of these
women have close person
al ties to the State, mak
ing the exhibit’s statewide
tour even more mean
ingful. Found among
Pearl Cleage’s papers and
featured in the exhibit is a
note from Cleage’s former
student, Tayari Jones.
Both Spelman College
alumni, Jones was writing
Cleage to express her
enthusiasm about seeing
Cleage at her upcoming
reading in Atlanta at
Charis Books, the South’s
oldest feminist bookstore
and a much-loved venue
for these writers to pres
ent their work and foster
community.
“We are proud to be able
to broaden the audience
for this important exhibit
by sharing it in public
libraries across the state,
often in communities
that don’t have access
to a resource like the
Rose Library,” said State
Librarian Julie Walker.
A goal of the partnership
between the Rose Li
brary and Georgia Public
Library Service is to raise
awareness about Rose
Library and see increased
use of the Black women
writers’ collections by
Georgia residents. “We
hope that library patrons
gain an appreciation for
the achievements and
challenges faced by these
accomplished authors,”
Walker said, “and that
they come away eager to
learn more and read their
works.”
The exhibit is supported
in part by a federal grant
to the Georgia Public
Library Service from
the Institute of Museum
and Library Services,
which envisions a nation
where individuals and
communities have access
