Sharing the Word
Soul Food
from the Hood

After the party
The fireworks and
celebrations have passed
I am seeing a lot of
fall webworms this year.
Webworms will feed on
basically any deciduous
tree. The female moth
lays a few hundred eggs
in clusters on the un
derside of leaves. The
eggs hatch in about a
week. The webworms
produce a web structure
that protects the cater
pillars from predators as
they feed. This web is
enlarged as the caterpil
lars feed.
This insect is in the lar
val, or caterpillar, stage
for four to six weeks. It
then pupates into a moth.
In the south, there are
multiple generations of
webworms each year. In
the north, there is only
one generation per year.
Fall webworms should
not be confused with
tent caterpillars, which
occur in the spring and
produce a neater look
ing web structure in the
crotch of tree limbs. Fall
webworms have their
structures on the tips of
branches. This insect
in observance of two
hundred and forty-six
years of Independence.
Other than the land of
Israel, no nation in his-
overwinters in the pupal
(cocoon) stage in bark
and leaf litter at the base
of the tree. Although
this insect has “fall” in
its name, it is very com
mon during the summer
in our area.
Fall webworms usually
do no serious damage
to mature trees in good
health. People have tried
to control the insect with
burning newspapers.
This will do more harm
to the tree than the web
worms will. If an insec
ticide can be applied to
the webworms (they can
sometimes be difficult
to reach with a sprayer),
they can be controlled
rather easily. Use only
insecticides labelled for
this use. As with all pes
ticides, always read and
follow all label instruc
tions. It may be easier
just to wait a few weeks
and let them cycle out.

tory has experienced the
blessings of God as has
America. The founding
fathers declared them
selves to be free from
the tyranny of a state
religion and oppressive
government. Though
called a rebellion by the
British, it was a divinely
inspired war of inde
pendence whereby the
citizens of a new repub
lic would have liberty
within the
framework of
just law.
Thus, the
Declaration
ofIndepen
dence stated:
We hold these
truths to be
self-evident,
that all men
are created
equal, that
they are en
dowed by their
Creator with certain
unalienable rights, that
among these are Life,
Liberty and the pur
suit of Happiness. That
concept of equality was
not dealing with one’s
heritage, intelligence
or economic status, but
with the essence of all
mankind.
Man is not the Creator
of life for God said ...
“Let us make man in our
image, in our likeness,
and let them rule over
the fish of the sea and
the birds of the air, over
the livestock, over all
the earth, and over all
the creatures that move
along the ground.” So
God created man in his
own image in the image
of God he created him;
male and female he cre
ated them” (Gen 1:26-27
NIV). “The LORD God
formed the man from the
dust of the ground and
breathed into his nostrils
the breath of life, and
the man became a living
being” (Gen 2:7 NIV).
After Adam and Eve
sinned against God,
Scripture notes a dis
tinction between their
creation and that of their
progeny. “When God
created man, he made
him in the likeness of
God. He created them
male and female and
blessed them. When
Adam had lived 130
years, he had a son in
his own likeness, in
his own image; and
he named him Seth”
(Gen 5:lb-3 NIV). All
mankind would be born
with Adam’s fallen
nature. The Apostle Paul
affirmed the equality of
man at birth when teach
ing that... “There is no
difference, for all have
sinned and fall short of
the glory of God, and
are justified freely by
his grace through the
redemption that came
by Christ Jesus” (Rom
3:22b-24 NIV).
“For there is no dif
ference between Jew
and Gentile — the same
Lord is Lord of all and
richly blesses all who
call on him, for, “Ev
eryone who calls on the
name of the Lord will be
saved” (Rom 10:12-13
NIV). While all men are
born spiritually dead,
there is the liberty to
choose to be born again
spiritually through faith
in Christ. Jesus told a
religious leader named
Nicodemus ... “I tell you
the truth, no one can
see the kingdom of God
unless he is born again”
(John 3:3 NIV). Peter
would pen in his first
epistle ... “For you have
been born again, not of
perishable seed, but of
imperishable, through
the living and enduring
word of God” (1 Peter
1:23 NIV).
Speaking of Himself,
Jesus said ... “I have
come that
they may
have life,
and that
they may
have it
more abun
dantly”
(John 10:10
NKJV).
Thus, faith
in Christ
opens the
option
for great
happiness. The psalm
ist wrote ... “But may
the righteous be glad
and rejoice before God;
may they be happy
and joyful” (Ps 68:3
NIV). That potential
for happiness is tied to
having the righteousness
of God imputed at the
moment of salvation.
“God made him [Jesus
Christ] who had no sin
to be sin for us, so that
in him we might become
the righteousness of
God” (2 Cor 5:21 NIV).
Paul prayed... “May
the God of hope fill you
with all joy and peace as
you trust in him, so that
you may overflow with
hope by the power of the
Holy Spirit” (Rom 15:13
NIV). Life, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness
are Biblical principles
and given by God for
all mankind. A nation
that honors and protects
those freedoms is bless
ed by God.

Special to the Ledger
Georgia gas prices
decreased at the pump
compared to a week ago.
Georgia drivers are now
paying an average price
of $4.32 per gallon for
regular unleaded gaso
line (subject to change
overnight). Monday’s
state average is 8 cents
less than a week ago,
10 cents more than last
month, and $1.41 more
than this time last year.
It now costs $64.80 to
fill a 15-gallon tank of
regular gasoline. Drivers
are paying $21.15 more
at the pump than last
year.
“Georgia pump price
average continues its
downward trend across
the state,” said Montrae
Waiters, AAA-The Auto
Club Group spokes
woman. “Crude oil
continues to decline and
demand dropped, which
has helped to lower gas
prices.”
Snarled Traffic
Traveling back from
the mountains of North
Carolina, my wife and
I were snarled in traf
fic. We had been at the
national conference
of Evange
lism Explosion
International. I
serve as Staff
Representative
for Southwest
Georgia. We
had our organi
zation’s National
President, our
organization’s
International President,
along with represen
tatives from all over
the world. We have a
shared vision to equip
believers to multiply
in and through local
churches worldwide.
We arrived Sunday. We
were returning Friday
afternoon.
We expected the traffic
as we hit Atlanta at rush
hour. Two hours lat
er, we were still in the
grind. Ebb and flow and
ebb and flow. I know
it’s Friday. I know it’s
sort of rush hour. But
there comes a time when
you start to think of the
ridiculousness of the
traffic. I kept thinking
the traffic was about to
break. An hour later,
the doldrums persist.
Finally, toward Macon,
we arrived to a multi
vehicle wreck where
the vehicles had been
removed from the road.
After we passed that
sight, the traffic moved
along like it should have
been moving along for
the past hour and one
half: 80 to 85 mph. One
doesn’t want to push the
envelope beyond those
speeds. Super speeder
tickets are one deterrent.
The other deterrent is
the sheer danger of it.
I began to reflect upon
the enormous impact
that wreck had had on
a literal multitude of
people. Everything
behind that wreck was
affected. The conditions
had been altered for all
of us who were to come
behind. I began to see
the highway and the
Decreasing Gas
Demand and Oil Prices
Push Pump Prices Lower
Since last Monday, the
national average for a
gallon of regular gaso
line has decreased by 9
cents to $4.81 (subject to
change overnight). Due
to the delayed release of
the Energy Information
Administration’s (EIA)
report on gasoline supply
and demand last week,
the federal agency re
leased two weeks of data
that showed gasoline
demand decreased each
week. Gas demand sits
at 8.93 million barrels
a day, which is lower
than last year’s rate of
9.11 million barrels a
day at the end of June.
On the other hand, total
domestic gasoline stocks
increased by 2.6 million
barrels to 221.6 million
barrels. These supply/
demand dynamics and
decreasing oil prices
have pushed pump prices
steam of humanity as
an allegory. “Therefore,
just as sin entered the
world through one man,
and death through sin,
and in this way, death
came to all people.”
(Romans 5:12)
Because Adam
sinned and he
was the first
human, all of
us who were to
come behind
are caught up
in this traffic
jam that is this
human race.
It’s not a very fast race
under the circumstances.
We are in the condition
of crash and burn.
But there is hope. We
can get off this road
to destruction because
another road has been
paved. “But the free gift
is not like the trespass.
For if many died through
the one man’s trespass,
much more have the
grace of God and the
free gift by the grace
of that one man Jesus
Christ abounded for
many. And the free gift
is not like the result of
the one man’s sin. For
the judgement following
the one trespass brought
condemnation, but the
free gift following many
trespasses brought justi
fication. For if, because
of one man’s trespass,
death reigned through
that one man, much
more will those that
receive the abundance of
grace and the free gift
of righteousness reign in
life through the one man
Jesus Christ.” (Romans
5: 15-17 esv)
Jesus hasn’t provided
a detour. He is the way.
“I am the Way, the truth,
and the life. No one
comes to the Father but
by Me.” (John 14:6) His
invitation is for us to
choose. “Enter the nar
row gate. For the gate is
wide and the way is easy
that leads to destruction,
and those who enter by
it are many. For the gate
is narrow and the way
is hard that leads to life,
and those who find it are
few.” (Matthew 7:13-14
ESV)
lower. As these trends
continue, drivers will
likely continue to see
relief at the pump.
