July 23,2022 during statewide scholarship showcase

girls from across Geor
gia will join together
in Woodstock for the
Distinguished Young
Women of Georgia State
Finals program to be
held Saturday, July 23 at
the Celebration Hall of
Hillside UMC. Simply
by participating in the
Distinguished Young
Women program at the
local level, all partic
ipants can be eligible
for college-granted
scholarships from many
colleges and universi
ties around the country
State finalists are eligi
ble for additional cash
and college scholarships.
Nationally, more than $2
million in cash schol
arship awards and over
$1 billion in college
scholarship opportuni
ties were provided to
the Class of 2022, some
of which included full
tuition plus room and
board. Best of all, it’s
FREE to participate!
In March, Meredith
Conger, daughter of
Joanne Conger and Paul
Conger, was named the
Distinguished Young
Woman of Lee County
for the Class of 2023.
Conger is a rising senior
at Lee County High
School in Leesburg.
During the showcase,
Conger and 8 other
seniors will be evaluated
by a panel of five judges
in the following catego
ries: Scholastics (25%),
Interview (25%), Talent
(20%), Litness (15%),
and Self-Expression
(15%). The participant
selected as the Distin
guished Young Woman
of Georgia will advance
to the national level at
the 66th Distinguished
Young Women National
Linals in Mobile, Ala.,
in June 2023, where
she will join with 49
other representatives
from across the country
in competing for cash
scholarships and the
opportunity to repre
sent the program as the
Distinguished Young
Woman of America.
Distinguished Young
Women of Georgia
welcomes the following
state finalist to Wood-
stock:
Ava Helton of Carters-
ville, Grayson Nudd of
Calhoun, Anna Cange-
lori of Roswell, Gicel
Verdeflor of Marietta,
Hannah Hartley of
Peachtree City, Darsha-
na Sharma of Duluth,
Meredith Conger of
Leesburg, Michelle
Nganga of Acworth,
and Lauren Blakley of
Sylvania.
The state finals show
case is open to the pub
lic and will begin at 6
p.m. Tickets are $35 and
available online through
the Distinguished Young
Women of Georgia

only.

The Junior Leadership
Lee Academy strategy
team will select 30 (thir
ty) 8th grade students
each year, 15 from each
middle school. The
process will begin with
student nominations in
August, student applica
tions in September, and
interviews in October.
The participants will be
notified of their selection
in early November.
The thirty 8th grade
students will participate
in 5 monthly sessions,
off campus, from Janu
ary to May 2023. Ses
sion topics will include
Understanding Leader
ship, Communicating
Effectively, Appreciating
Differences, Managing
Conflict, and Setting
Goals and Making Deci
sions. These leadership
sessions will be facili
tated by 24 Lee County
adults who were trained
by the J.W. Lanning
Institute of Leadership
Development, in March
2022.
Each session will also
include a community
focus, welcoming local
community experts
in areas of recreation,
healthcare, agricul
ture, government, law
enforcement, courts,
business, industry, and
entrepreneurship.
Upon graduation from
the academy, students
will be invited to join
the Lee County Junior
Ambassador Program,
which will continue to
guide and support them
through high school
graduation.

Leesburg 1874 -1974 Centennial Celebration
The Historical Centennial Celebration of Leesburg was held during September and October
of 1974. During this time special events were held reflecting life in 1874. One of the highlights
of Historical Centennial Celebration of Leesburg was the Centennial Parade that was held
