Ron Simpson was pre
sented the Jim Fowler
Environmental Award
at the Artesian Alli
ance’s Annual Meeting
Tuesday, June 20 for his
dedication to Wildlife
Conservation and Edu
cation.
The award was initial
ly created in 2009 and
features the sculpture
“Windblown Tree” by
artist Derek Taylor. The
award is currently dis
played at the Creekside
Center at Chehaw. Pre
vious recipients include
Jim Fowler, Don Dally,
Ben Kirkland, and Tom
my Gregors.
“Ron is a worthy
recipient of this award,”
said Executive Director
of the Artesian Alliance,
Tommy Gregors. “As a
professional and private
citizen, he is a passion
ate advocate for envi
ronmental conservation
and has have contribut
ed to the betterment of
wildlife in Georgia. I am
proud to have worked
with Ron over the years
and appreciate his
knowledge, advice, and
friendship.”

taken over Lee County
Rivers Alive annu
al clean-up from Jim
Wright. The event is
scheduled for Saturday
July 29 from 9 am to 1
pm. There will both be
on water and on land op
portunities to clean-up.
Targeted areas include
Pirates Cove, Luke’s
Landing, Sutton’s
Landing, Kinchafoonee
Creek from Skipper’s
Landing to Sandy
Beach Landing, Kin
chafoonee Creek from
Sandy Beach Landing
to Sutton’s Landing,
and Muckalee Creek
from Pirates Cove (Mile
Marker 3) to Chehaw
Landing.
A waiver must be
signed for participation.
If you have any other
volunteer people or
groups that may want to
join please contact Jessi-
ca@flintriverkeeper.org
and she can send you to
the electronic waiver or
get a copy of the waiver
as an attachment. Waiv
ers can also be signed at
the Lee County Cham
ber of Commerce.
If the volunteer wishes

Volunteers can get
snacks, drinks, bags,
grabbers and gloves
at Sutton’s landing the
morning of the event if
needed.
All trash collected
needs to be dropped
off at the Landings or
at Pirates Cove. Signs
for drop off will be at
various sites. Please no
tify Code Enforcement
Officer Randy James if
you do drop off trash. It
needs to be weighed for
their report.

will meet
Tuesday,
July 11 at
6:00 p.m.
The meeting
will be
held at the
T. Page Tharp
Governmental
Building
from the University of
Georgia with a Bachelor
of Science in Forestry
and a Masters in Sci
ence. His thesis was on
the Bobwhite Quail in
Georgia Piedmont. He
worked for the Georgia
Department of Natural
Resources for 30 years
as a District Biologist,
Survey and Analysis Bi
ologist, Quail Research
Project Leader, and
Statewide Turkey Res
toration Project Leader.
From 1995 to 1998 he
served as the Regional
Director for the Georgia
Conservancy. He also
worked as a Wildlife
Management Consultant
for quail plantations
across Southwest Geor
gia and North Florida
for 16 years.
Simpson has held
leadership positions or
been involved with var
ious community groups
including Porterfield
Methodist Church, an
election precinct manag
er, President and Trea
surer of Thronateeska
Heritage Foundation,
Quail Unlimited Hunt
Committee Chairman,
President of Albany
Sertoma, Past presidents
Sertoma Clubs, Sunbelt
Camera Club, Southwest
Georgia Coin Club, Al
bany Audubon Society,
Thronateeska Kennel
Club, and the Wild
Turkey Foundation. He
is also a past recipient
of the Georgia Wildlife
Federation’s Conserva
tionist of the Year.
Formed in 2019, The
Artesian Alliance is a
partnership between
the Flint RiverQuari-
um, and Thronateeska
Heritage Center. The
collaboration created by
the partnership has led
to joint programmatic
efforts, greater operat
ing efficiencies and cost
containment, and a more
effective use of limited
resources for the three
organizations involved.
Through the Artesian
Alliance, the three
venues look forward to
both a re-energized base
of support and a slate of
new initiatives that will
help lead the community
into the future.
We are seeking spon
sorship from the commu
nity to support this event.
Your logo or company
name will be on the back
of the t-shirts, media
releases and other various
marketing tools used to
promote this event. The
sponsorship is $250. This
event which is part of
the county’s storm water
program partners with
area groups that have
an interest with water
quality and protection of
the environment. These
partnerships include: The
Flint River Aquarium,
Chehaw Park, Leesburg
Law Enforce
ment Explorers,
LCHS School’s
NavyJ.R.O.T.C.and
Flint Riverkeeper.
The yearly event
attracts 200+
volunteers.
Over the years
of removing debris the
volunteers have removed
several unusual items
from the creek bed and
banks. These include:
sunken boats, washing
machines/dryers, bicycles,
wheel barrels, Dr. Pepper
drink machine, engine
block, and intact camper
shell.
Judge Smith Re-Elected to Board of
Governors of State Bar of Georgia

Judge R. Rucker Smith
of Americus has been
re-elected to serve on
the Board of Governors
of the 54,000-member
State Bar of Georgia.
Smith will continue
to serve in the South
western Circuit seat on
the board, representing
Lee, Macon, Schley,
Stewart, Sumter and
Webster counties. He
earned his law degree
from Emory University
School of Law and was
admitted to the State
Bar of Georgia in 1979.
He is a past chair of
the State Bar’s Judicial

Alive has been success
ful each year in improv
ing the water quality
and appearance of our
waterways due to the
support and assistance
that is received though
the Lee County Board of
Commissioners, The City
of Leesburg, off duty fire
staff, The Lee County
Sheriff’s Office, Lee
County Public Works and
the Lee County Cham
ber of Commerce. Last
year’s event netted several
pounds of debris from
the creeks.
