Lee County 4-H’ers competed at 80th
Annual 4-H State Congress in Atlanta

Georgia 4-H celebrated
excellence during the
80th Annual 4-H State
Congress as top 4-H’ers
from around the state
gathered in Atlanta July
18-21.
State Congress includes
the state-level Project
Achievement and Lead
ership in Action contests,
as well as recognition
of youth development
professionals, supporters,
and public officials for
their contributions to the
success of 4-H in Geor
gia.
Three Lee County
4-H’ers competed at State
Congress this year, in
cluding Sam Tennison in
the Health project, Bryce
Braswell in the Computer
Information Technology
project, and Katy Webb
in the Performing Arts
Drama project. Tennison
won 2nd place for her
presentation on men
tal health and anxiety
disorders. Tennison will
be attending Mercer this
Fall. Braswell’s presenta
tion detailed the how-to’s
of building a website
for beginners. Braswell
will be attending Geor
gia Southwestern this
fall. Webb performed a
monologue from Hamil
ton and will be a senior at
Lee County High School
this year. Tennison also
received the Georgia Key
Award for her outstand
ing accomplishments in
leadership, citizenship
and community service
through 4-H work.
Students who place first
at state-level competitions
in Georgia 4-H earn the
title of “Master 4-H’er.”
During State Congress,
more than 200 delegates
competed in 50 Project
Achievement areas and
eight delegates compet
ed in the Leadership in
Action contest; one indi
vidual from each project
area and two Leadership
in Action competitors
received Master 4-H’er
status. Special event
Master 4-H’ers from the
2022-23 program year
were also recognized at
State Congress.
More than 48,000 youth
participated in Project
Achievement last year
through 4-H programs
at the county level. This
essential Georgia 4-H
program element empow
ers young people with
leadership, creativity,
public speaking, and
record keeping skills
that will last a lifetime.

students choose a project
of interest from a list of
areas that include agricul
ture, human development,

research the topic, create
a detailed presentation,
and participate in related
community service and
civic engagement activi
ties. State Congress com
petition also includes in
dividual interviews with
qualified professionals
who engage with 4-H’ers
about their project work.

The Leadership in
Action competition calls
for 4-H’ers to identify
a community need and
work to meet that need by
planning and implement
ing original projects and
initiatives. Competitors
then prepare an applica
tion packet and partici
pate in interviews at the
district level. The 2023
Leadership in Action
winners are Amiyah
Elam from Ware Coun
ty and Jack Wurst from
Columbia County.
Elam founded a com
munity organization for
young girls called “I Am”
that seeks to empower
participants with tools
to overcome challenging
circumstances. Wurst
started a project called
“Celebration Cakes” that
provides community
members with no-cost
cake-baking kits to
encourage family baking
and human connection.
Other finalists were Lilly
Kate Farrar from Haber
sham County, Venya
Gunjal from Cobb Coun
ty, Thomas Holt from
Ben Hill County, Cole
man Mangham from Tift
County, Aubrianna Stew
art from Bryan County,
and Winta Ykeallo from
Spalding County.
Georgia 4-H recognizes
stakeholders who provide
guidance and support to
Georgia 4-H throughout
the year at State Con
gress.
Rachel Frisbie, Mon
roe County 4-H Agent,
received the Ryles Rising
Star Award and Gary
Black, former Georgia
Commissioner of Ag
riculture, received the
Friend of 4-H Award
during the 4-H Lead
ership Banquet. Repre
sentative Rick Jasperse
received the 4-H Green
Jacket Award and Cindy
Meadows, Seminole
County 4-H Agent and
County Extension Co
ordinator, received the
William H. Booth Award
at the 4-H Annual Ban
quet. Additional William
H. Booth Award finalists
include Brittany Teets
from Rockdale County,
Jakyn Tyson from Eman
uel County, and Susan
Yearwood from Stephens
County.
Leaders in the camping
program and 4-H center
leadership also received
recognition during State
Congress. Additionally,
the 2023-2024 Georgia
4-H Board of Directors
were inducted into their
positions of leadership.
The 2022-2023 Board of
Directors were honored
for their year of service.
State Congress is made
