The purpose of this program is to recognize outstanding alumni who have maintained a high standard of excellence and distinguished them selves through their work, personal accomplishments, or in the lives of others. These individuals exemplify the ideals of the Lee County School System and the community it serves, and serve as role models for current and future Lee County High School students. Nominations will be accepted through June 1, 2024. Nomination packets can be emailed directly to the nominator. For more information on how you can nominate your LCHS Distin guished Alumni, please email the committee at lchsdistinguishedalum- ni@gmail.com Community Parks Approved By Commissioners Responding to re quests from citizens, the commissioners approved “pocket parks” for Callaway Lakes and Springdale during their meeting September 25th. The third park area was tabled due to proposed modifications that will be made. Kathleen Fiorito, who resides in the Callaway Lakes Subdivision, said “I was disappointed that I forgot the rule about having to sign in first, in order to be allowed to speak at the meeting. I had hoped to make a case for an additional park bench as only one exists and for an additional piece of new play equipment, in addition to a new swing set. However, getting these maintenance fixes and safety upgrades are wonderful for a long neglected park.” A large delegation of citizens from north Lee County were at the coun ty commission meeting September 26th to voice their opposition to the potential of closing roads in their part of the coun ty. Earlier, an individual had made contact at the county office to initiate the closure of Gray Moss Road. Commissioner Dennis Roland explained that he was told that potential closure includ ed Gray Moss, Chokee Road, Dan Green Road and Bates Road but Ro land stressed that closure of those roads were not on the agenda. Page Tharp Governmental Building everyone that resides on that road wanted it closed. The concerned citizens appreciated the assurance of the com missioners that they had no intentions of closing the public roads. The commissioners recognized county staff with five years of service during the September 26th meeting. Receiving recognition were Court ney Dassie , commu nication officer with E-911, Jamie Roberts, equipment operator with public works department and Matthew Brown, assistant shift command er with the sheriff’s office. The commissioners approved an alcohol license from Mr. Devan- shukumar Patel for the retail sale of off-premise consumption of liquor, wine and beer. The business is named “The Spirits” will be located on Hwy 82 West, in a building to be construct ed. The application was previously approved to be located in an exist ing building near that location but Mr/ Patel decided to construct a new facility for the store in the 1300 block. The commissioners discussed repairs needed on the Fire Truck #8 which is a 2003 Interna tional that is a reserve truck. The diesel engine on this unit lost power and needs to be re placed. The cost provid ed by the mechanic is up to $50,000. According to Fire Chief David Forrester, with this fire truck out of service, the fire department only has one reserve truck. Forrester said the cost of a new fire truck is over $700,000. The chief recommended that repairing the fire truck. According to the fire chief, the fire pump is in good condition and with this unit being repaired, it should provide many years of reliable service as a reserve truck. The county received one estimate for the repairs and carried the truck to another shop for an estimate. Vice Chairman Luke Sin gletary stated that bids should be obtained for the repair service. It was agreed that bids would be requested and the commissioners will de cide on the repair at their next meeting. The commissioners awarded the bid for landscaping and irriga tion at the Tharp Build ing and courthouse to Lawn Barber Nursery, which was the lowest The 4th Annual “Big Steve” Memorial Dice Run will be held Satur day, October 7th. This event is in memory of LCpl Steven G. Sutton who lost his life while serving on active duty. Registration for the October 7th Dice Run will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Lee County Courthouse in Lees- SPLOST A Special Called Joint Meeting with the Lee County Board of Commissioners, the City of Leesburg, and the City of Smithville, will be held Tuesday, responsive bidder for $81,043.96. The amount for the courthouse was $47,996.16 and $33,047.80 for the Tharp building. A resolution was approved by the com missioners urging The Governor and General Assembly of Georgia to burg. After much discus sion, the commissioners tabled the professional services agreement with Reliable Engineering for the design and right of way plat generation of bar.
