An Indiana editor Las won a suit
against a deliquent subscriber who
had never ordered the paper” but
who it was shown had regu'ary called
for it and had taken it out of the post
office for two years.
A young Indy recently sent twenty
five cents to a Chicago advertiser for
a receipt to whiten and keep the
hands soft, and received this reply:
“Soak them well three times a day
regularly in dish water while your
mother rests.”
Do not, contradict your friend,
neighbor, or companion every time
you think he is wrong; let it pass; it
is of little or no conquence, is fraught
with no danger, and jour contra -
diction or criticism may only be a
desire on your part to exhibit a self
assumed superior knowledge.

She Eats Dirt by the Pound.
There is a negro woman living in
the lower part of our town who makes
her living almost entirely off of red
clay. She says she eats about five
poundf a day and it is just as sweet
to her as sugar. She takes a lump of
dirt and sucks it until she gets all the
clay and then spits out the course
sand. She claims to be as healthy
and stont as any body and can do as
much work in a day as any col r and
woman in town. She eats but little
else and whenever she eats bread she
must precede it with clay and follow
it with clay or else she says it will not
remain on her stomach. In other
words she has to make a kind of bread
sandwich m her stomach with clay if
she wants to get the benefit of a bis
cuit.
She lias been eating clay at the rates
of five pounds a day for about five
years she claims and if people do not
believe her word she will give exhibi
tions of one two pound meal, —Echo
Gazette.

An Old Story.
Man once owned a horse’ He drove
him all day and at night ho stabled
him in his barn.
He ban never bought a lock for the
barn door. Every day be made up
Ins mind to bay one. Either through
stinginess or thoughtlessness he put

iJie barn to get his horse. He found
out that during the niglit thieves had
entered and taken 1 is horse away.
The man raised a groat outcry.
Then, stiange to say, bought a lock.
May be he thought they would come
the next night to steal his hay.
This is not anew story.
Many a young man, as he goes
plodding the downward road to ruin
at a reckless speed, often makes stiong
resolutions to return from the error
ofhiswais but just so often to be
broken, until it becomes everlastingly
too lite to accomplish wka* he othei
wise might, and at last dies a disgrace
to himself, Ins family, his country and
his God.
Many a young lady resolves to
make amends for tie harsh words she
has spoken, the unkind acts sue has
done; but goes on failing to carry out
her resolutions and then by fails to
aceomplise her mission in the worl 1*
Many a church member —we cannot

Many a luiiehcr expect to say a

orphan child, but keept putting it off
until at last toe poor child becomes
broken-hearted and despondent and
leaves the the schoolroomjnever to re

And last but not least, many a dear
delinquent has kept putting off paying
his subscription until the poor editor
was forced by necessity to seek his
fortune elsewhere or at last die a
pauper and a vagabond on the earth
Do not put off until tomorrow the
things you should do today,—Ex.
An editor of an Alabama paper
makes the following liberal offer in a
recent issue: ‘Wehave taken wood,
potatoes, corn, eggs, blitter lumber,
sand, calico sour kraut second-hand
clothing, coon skins, bug juico, scrap

wants to know if we would s nd it to
him six months fo ■ a large owd. We
have no precedent for ref using never
having declined, and if we can find a
man who is out of an owl and needs
one, we’ll take it.”
It’s your own fault if you use old

olfactories, when you can get that very
pleasnt and stainless liquid, Dr. Tich

State School Commissioner Glenn
says that the standard of the public
school teachers in the state has im
proved wonderfully in the last few
yaars. He attributes this to the
state normal school at Athens and to
the of study precribed for teachers by
the state board of education. *
Gov. Atkinson left Atlanta last FriJ
day for New York where he goes to
borrow $200,000 with which to pay
off the school teachers. The State
will have plenty of money in the fall,
but that is too long to keep them
waiting, so the Governor will try to
borrow and pay back in the fall.

SCHOOL IJOOKS.
The Merits of Some Popular
Books Pointed out.
BALDWIN HEADERS
For years there has been a demand
for a series of Readers which would
meet the requirements of the common
schools of Georgia.
Baldwin’s Readers till the bill.
They are not toy picture books
with baby talk of “The eat on the
Mat,” etc., but am written so as to be
most he pfitl to the teacher and at the
same time so as to advance the pupil
in the most approved manner. In the
higher Readers of Baldwin’s series,
the pupil is introduced to the best lit
erature of our language The binding
is perfect. They are the most popu
lar readers in Georgia although only
one year old. In every sense they are
modern and and up to date, yet. they
are by far the cheapest readers on the
market.
milne's arithmetic.
The whole subject ot Arithmetic,
treated in the most approved manner,
with all the mordern methods, and
innumerable helps to teachers and
pupils, beginning with number work
for children and closing with thu most
advanced phases of the subject—all
in two books’ price of both 95c.
These hooks seek to present the
subject in a simple manner and at the
same time they are exhaustive and
comprehensive.
conklin’s grammar.
Conklin’s Grammars form a two
book series. The fiist book, “Practi
cal Lessons in Language” is what its
name implies, practical lessons in
language, leading the child by a
knowledge and use of language to the
second book.
English Grammar and Composition
This second book is a complete, tech
nical English Grammer; Analysis,
synthesis and parsing go hand-in-hand
Diagraming is presented in a simple,
concise manner, but may be omitted
if the teacher so desires. No book
yet published presents grammar in
such an attractive manner; or teaches
it more thoroughly, and at the same
time gives so much of composition.
RED WAV’s NATURAL GEOGRAPHIES
The ablest critics pronounce Red
way’s Natural Geographies tbo best
ever given the people of this country.
It is really a “natural series, introduc
ing the child to the science in the
most natural manner, leading the pu
pil to love Geography rather than
hate it. It is not a compilation of
dry facts, but is so arranged as to be
intensely interesting from beginning
to end.
The Natural Geographies make-llie
subject anew science. No school
book ever offered the public has grown
so rapidly in public favor.
