MISS HELEN COULD.
indissolubly associated with the
ministrations of mercy in the pres
ent war is the name of Miss Helen
Gould, of New York
While this noble-hearted' woman
has not felt called upon to go to the
front in person for the purpose of
beating relief to the wounded sold
iers, she has freely devoted her vas t
wealth to the accomplishment of this
result.
When the war broke out several
months ago Miss Gculd drew her
check for the handsome sum of sliO t
000 which she placed in the bands of
tee relief authorities in New York.
Feeling that her liberality in this
in this instance was net sufficient,
she has since given to the same cause
the additional sum of £25, 000.
Who can envy wealth m the pos
se,vslan of such hands? We tip our
hat to Miss Helen Gould and com
mend her example to the emulation
of other favored members of her sex.
She is rich ju worldly goods, but
richer still in the gratitude which she
has inspired in the heart of the
American soldior. Is it not better
thus to kindle the savor of sweet in
cense through deeds of liberality than
to hoard up wealth with the greed of
'he miser and then leave it all for
someone elfe to spend?—

One of the privates in particular

when he finished he sat back in his

Gee!
Did you gel enough to eat? asked
a beautiful society girl at his side
her face beaming with kindness.
I should sbv so said the soldier

The two brothers met a stranger
