MORE HISTORY.
On August the 29th 1898 I, J. J.
Stow, was in Homer and registered
and asked Mr. L. J. Ragsdale when
he would be in our settlAnent, and
stated to him that a number of the
“boys” had not J registered. He told
me that he would be at Mr. Bob
Gobers on the following Fiiday night
and for me to tell all of those tiia*-
wero for him, "and those that were not
for him I needn’t mind about telling
them J. J. Stow*.
History is beiig made rapidly. It
is well that we wiite some of it for the
benefit of those who shall come after
us.
When we come to look into the
matter we' see that Mr. L. J. Rags
dale admits the truth of the state
ment which we made at Baushville
about populist asking foi blanks, but
failed to get them. But he is not
willing to admit that he was giving
opportunities to democrats which
wore denied to populist. So he says
we were too hasty in our assertion,
We never know what is in the heart
of man until it comes out in his acts
We do know that Mr. Ragsdale ad
mits that most of his good deeds in
this matter were done after Sept 6th.
When we read his statement; we
might conclude tha. if he had know n
his dear Bro. asked for a blank he
could not have denied him, but tb e
fact stares us in the face that Mr,
Acrey had been informed that no
clorks were to be employed.
Mr. W. J. Burgess is the populist
who had been'employed "as clerk be
fore Sept. 6lh this fact was known at
Busbvillc. If you would know how
Mr. Burgess came to be a clerk, ask
him; and he will tell you that he went
to Mr. Ragsdale and asked him to go
to the speaking at Red Oak on the
night of the sixth of Sept. Mr. Rags
dale complained at the distance and
the mud and said he would have to
have a clerk to do the work, where
npon Mr. Burgess tendered his ser
vices and insisted that he be supplied
with material at once.
Now “A drowing man will.catch at
a straw,” sand the gentleman ad
mits that some ot the straws at which
he catches had to grow after he began
to drown.
Four populist and four democrat
clerks. Did the gentlemen keep back
part so as to deceive the dear people
or did ho forget in his haste that he
had Mr. John S. Parks and Mr. T. F
Hill, democrats, to 3ct as clerks lor
him.
A number of men can be four.d to
prove that Mr. Stow told them on the
day Col, Brooke spoke in Homer
what he says above, so you see this is
not evidence manufactured for the
occasion and yet it goes to show that
democrats were enjoying opportunities
opportunities to:register which were
denied to populist- Respt,
A. H. Stapler.
A CRITICAL TIME.
During The Battle of Santiago.
SICK OK WELL, A KUSII
NIGHT ANT) DAT.
The Packers at the Battle of San
tiagode Cuba were all Heroes
Their Herioc Efforts in
etting Ammunition
and Rations to the
Front Saved the ’
.Day.
P. E. Butler, of pack-ttain No. 3,
writing from Santiago, De Cuba, on
[uly 23d, says: “We all bad diarrhoea
ic more or less violent form, and when
we londed we had no time to see a
doctor, for it was a case of ruth and
rush nighi and day to keep the troops
supplied with ammunition and rations
but thanks to Chamberlain’s Colic
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, we
were able to keep at work and keep
our health; in foct, I sincesely beleive
that at one critical time this medicine
was the indirect saviour of our army
for if the packers had been unable to
work tbere would have been no wcy
of getting supplies to the front. There
were no roadi thai a wagon train could
use. My comrado and myself had
the good lortune to lay in a supply of
his mepicine for eur pack-train be
fere we left Tampa, and I know in
four cases it absolutely saadd liefe.”
