THE FUTURE OF SPAIN
An article in the nineteenth centu
ry contributed by a well informed
Spaniard, gives some interesting views
about the fnture of Spain, l'be writer
admits that the future of his country
is eqceedingiy gloomly, declaring that
at at the same time that the Spanish
public does not appreciate the difficnl
ties it will have *o face until 'he war
is over and gormal peace conditions
are entirely restored. The writer es
timates the Spanish debt to lie two
billion dollars, while the amount re
quired to pay interest and the re
demption of charges is one hundred
and four million The total
revenue of Spain is set down at one
hundred and sixty million dollars, one
hundred million of which the writei
says is necessary *o defray the ordi
nary expenses of the government,
when economically administered. This
would only leave sixty millions to pay
the annual imprest ana redemption
charges of one hundred and four mill
ion, leaving an annual deficit f forty
four million, pi ended that the affairs
of the government are henestly and
administered, which is very doubtful
when the character of Spanish politi
cians are considered.
It is quite evident that the Spanish
subjects, in order to meet the ex
pnses of their govenment, and pay
the interest account on the public debt
must submit to heavy taxation, which
has keen brought upon them by the
action of Sagasta govenment in con
tinuing the struggle against a super
ior power, long after the entire world
saw that the Spanish cause was utlef
ly hopeless.

Telling Him The Truth.
“I think Willie is learning to
smoke,” said his mother. “I wish
you to speak to him about it.”
What shall 1 say to him?” asked
his father
“Why, toll him the truth, ol
course,”
Aud so Willie was duly called up t
and his father put on a severe look
and said:
“Willie, I understand you are
learning to smoke. Now, before it
goes any farther I want to tell you
what the result may be. You may
die in a year, and then again you
may live to be a hundred years old.”
“Why, Johu!” expostulated the
boys’s mother.
“You told me to tell him the
truth.” remarked the father, “and
there’s hardly a week goes by that
I don’t hoar of someone close to the
century mark who has smoked ever

A NcW story of An Old Song.
The first time that the tender
lyric, “Home, Sweet Home,” was
sung in public was when an Indian
brooding over the death of his be
loved squaw and papoose, committed
suicide on the spot where they were
buried.
It was a time when the boundary
lines between Georgia and Tennevise
were in dispute, and the bu.if breed*
were constantly making trout/
In order to harmanize contending
factions, our government established
a trading post there- When John
Howard Payne appeared on the
scene he was arrested on suspicion
of inciting the Indians to insubordi
nation, and was carried to the coun-*
eil house.
With others, he witnessed the
burial of the heart hroaken Indian*
lie began softly singing to himself
the song which has since echoed
througe every land on earth. Tho
sequel is told Dy the Atlanta Consti
tution in these words:
Gen. Bishop, who had kept a close
scrutiny on his actions, heard the
■ong and called Payne to him.
“Young man,” said the t stern old
Indian fightea, “where did you loam
that song?”
“I wrote that song myself,” replied
Payne
“ Aid where did you get the tune?’*
“I composed that also.”
“Would you let mi have a copy
of it?”
“Certainly, I will,”
“Welt, a man who can sing and
write like this is no incendiary. Ap
pearance!? may be against yon, but
lam going to set you free. I shall
write out your diecnarge immediately,’
and a pass to carry you anywhere
you choose through the nation - ”
Payee had beeu no used in the home
of a family near by, and on Ilia re
turn there he exhibited the pass and
related the'circumstances. That was
was the first, time that “Home, Sweet
Home” had ever been sung in public.
