GA m THURSDAY, NOVEMBER, 10 1898. ‘IS THE WOULD GROWING WORSE?” It is a sign of a healthy interest in the practical affairs of ’if* that our clergymen are beginning to preach sermons on the question as to wheth er the world is growing worse or not. It is gratifying to be able to believe that thier verdiat will be that on the whole the world is growing better. It would be very uncomfortable for tho clergy if in spite of their devoted efforts this poor world should keep on going from bad to jwos l , and it would be still more unfortunate for the rest of us who would have to en dure the sad results of stich degener acy. Poor world as this is, it is only necessary to study the facts of its condition to be convinced that it realizes Gladstone’s pious estimate of the next world—that it will be a con dition of improvement. Mortal man having a body as well as a soul, must be fed in < r Jer to live, and man is better fed t day than ever. He is belter lodged, bet ter clothed and has bis health better cared for. He is cleaner as well as healthier, and, in a word, his bodily wants are better supplied now than at any former time. Mentally tho world is improving. Education is a steadily widening in. fluenee, and with ths dissipation of ignorance comes the disappearance of many mental troubles. In spite of occasional outbreaks of jingoism and imperialism here and there, the com mon sense of the world is gradually irresistibly substituting peace and arbitration for war and bluster. Even politically we are constantly reach ing out for better things, although, of course, we can tell more about that after the election returns are all in* On the whole there is 110 more profitable subject for contemplation and comment by preachers in the pulpit and out of it than the condition of this world we live in. Nor could j tuere be a more pious hope to ex press than the hope that as we who are bring today are more fortunate iban those who have gone before us, so may those who come after us be even more fortunate than we. —New York World.* CASf ©a2A. Henceforward —to uso Nelson’s words about his own most desperate acction — “there was no muneuvering, there was only downright fighting,” and great as was Jones’ unquestionable merit as a handler of strips it was downright fight ing endurance of the most extreme and individual, character that won this bat tle. W hen thus in contact, the superior ity cf the British eightcens over tho Americr.n twelves, though less than at a distance, was still great, but afar heavier disparity lay iu tho fabrics of the two enemies. The Richard was a very old ship, rotten, never meant for naval use. Tho Serapis was new, oil her first com mi ssiou. The light hitherto having engaged tho port guns of the latter, tho starboard lower gun ports were still closed, and from tho ships touching could not bo opened. They .t- . • lilrurn rvC.’ hmR fhp fiffht were therefore blown oh, and the fight went on. “A novelty in naval combats was now presented to many witnesses, but to few admirers," Quaintly wrote xjiou tenunt Dale, who was in the midst of the scene below decks. “The rammers were run into tbe respective ships to S enable tho men to load” —that is, the staves of tins rammers of one ship cu ; tored tho ports of the other as the guns j were being loaded. ‘‘We became so close fore and aft, ” reported Tearsou, "that the muzzles of cur gnns touched 1 each other's sides,” and even so, by tho testimony of tho lieutenant on the lower gnu deck cf tho fcSerapis, her guns could not bo fully run out owing to the near ness of tbe vessels.—Captain Mahan iu Scribner’s.
