What better thing can a man do
wuh his life than to help his fellow
men ? He can build ships, he can
build groa‘ buildings; but suppose be
builds character—suppose be devel

.•ig"H some p nr, jjrifung fellow, leads
him to Christ and the cross, and he !
becomes a minister of the gospel o*
Jesus Christ, and the iViefisuge that lie
speaks eoes on through all the ages.
How much better tor a man to do that
with his life than Anything else!
I believe that God calls us to btisi
ness I belfsve that it is right for a
man to he diligent in business; not
slothful, but fervent in spirit, serving
the Lord. Business men are needed
to stay in their canning houses and j
watch the wheels of their business,
that there may come to them the pro
duce of their toil aad investment of
their capita!. But to live for Christ is
far better than nursing ths bonds of a
railroad or the stocks of a bask, or
listening to the hum of the wheels of
the mill. A single shake of the tele
graph wire may kusetlle a man and
make a ramv day for him and a heavy
heart. It is well worth while for a
man to have before him as a dream a
line cyuntry seat, a eargen, quietness,
a solendid position in the city; but if
that is all he has got, what little satis
faction it will he to him when he J
conies to that tit Vie when he will go up !
stall’s ami say, ‘T am not very Wei] j
to-day; I guess I won't go to the of- j
lice;” anu the next day, “Perhaps you ■
had better send for the 'doctor.” He
lies with Ins face to the wall, and all
the great stores he has built, all the
great activities that hare felt the touch
of his fingers, fade out of his eyes; and
he thinks of the other shore and of
what treasures he has laidjup beyond
the stars
I tell you, then, young men, we i
want something ulofe than the things j
of this present life. What a Rpk-ndiil
pi2tuie that is of Mr, Gladstone going
into the little church ar.d reading tile
les -oiis. Is he less great because he i
believes in God, and -because lie wit
nesses for his nani" ? Ido not believe
in ticketing a man, or giving him a
trumpet and sending him out to pa— |
rade bis religion. The clock tbdt \
never strikes may tell the time just as
well the hfl'dt big thing that wakes ;
us tipjat night Hut I believe in a
man being a witness. You want a mt.n
with an opinio*, and willing to speak
it out. A man m business lias some,
thing to say about the city affairs- j
Why should we not be just the same
kind of men when it comes to Christ
ian work and Christian living?
I think the greatest, wieck of all in
this world is tha loss of a young man
when|he goBs down the world is poor- j
or than for anything else that could be j
lost. It is tile young men who will!
rule tha country iD coming years.
