BANKS COUNTY JOURNAL VOL. XVI. A Lesson For Lynchers And An Object Lesson For Sworn Officials. The following, taken from the Wesleyan Christian Advocate, is good enough to keep going. We gladly copy it, and wish eveiy weekly newspaper in the state would follow suit: Some time ago a negro in South Carolina, Will Fair, by name, was placed in jail charged with the nameless crime upon a white wo man. A mob assaulted the jail and even resorted to dynamite to gel their murderous hands on the poor negro. Sheriff M lute, ot Spartanburg, brave officer that he is, put his own life in peril, but saved the negro. The other day Will Fair was tried by a jury ol white meu and was acquitcd. The Columbia State says there was not a doubt of his innocence, the evi dence of his quiltlessness being substantive. There was not a par tide of proof of his guilt. The men disposed to mob law should ponder this case. It shows that the law can l>e relied on for the protection ol the people and that even a poor feiendless negro can have a fair trial by white men of the South. Some of our Northern li iend might also study this ease to lheir profit. This case also shows that a brave officer of the law can be relied on for the protection of prisoners put into his keeping. This courageous conduct of the sheriff shows that a uumder of men have Ims‘n saved the awful deed ol killing an iuncent man, and it has given to all men who think ahigh *(•! appreciation of the sufficiency of the law to protect the interests ol l all the people. A woman never ceaßes to wondar what her husband did with the sli he had last week. —Philadelphia Ledger Homer, Elanks County, Georgia, Thursday, October 16, 1913. Mrs- Speer an Invcnter Atlanta. till. October liith— Mis. A.,1. Speir, formerly Fannie Hoyt of Cornelia. tJeorgia, first cousin to Mi's. Woodrow Wilson, and the only woman in the family who rivalled Mrs. \\ ilson in kitchen lore in their girlhood days, has blossomed forth as an in venter. Like tlu* president’s wife, Mrs. Spier was the daughter of a well known l’resbytei ian preacher, and the two families w ere intimate. Mrs. Spier, then Miss Hoyt, was the champion cake baker of the lamily in fact a veritable Queen of Cake bakers if the memory of Georgians of the past general ion is to be t rust ed. Whenever there was a wed ding in the family, Fannie Hoyt was the one who made the wedding cuke. These facts are not irrelevant. They have a direct bearing on the invention. Fannie Hoyt’s pictty hands and slender wrists used to get mighty tired beating eggs for those cakes’ and so Mrs. Speir has invited some sort of a wonderful egg beater that will lK*at up the whites and tlu* yellows at the same time separately. She has had it patented at Washington and ex peels that it w ill bring her fame. LOST! One ladie’s sweater, navy blue from A. G.
