FAIR BUT POWERFUL HAND
Spanish Queen May Be Said to Have
Won Succession by the Exercise
of the Latter.
H. R. H. the Infanta Eulalia of
Spain, in her brilliaht memoirs,
which are now appearing in one of
the magazines, tells a dramatic story
of how the Salic law was abolished
in Spain.
When her father, Ferdinand VII.,
was taken with his final illness,
there was a Salic law in Spain by
which his brother Carlos would be
his heir and successor. “But an old
enmity existed between Don Carlos
and my mother’s aunt, the Infanta
Inuisa Carlota. She had said to
him, ‘You’ll never reign.’ And be
had laughed at her.”
But when the king was plainly
dying of paralysis she put before
him a paper that she had prepared,
abolishing the Salic law; and, plac
ing a pen in his hand, she took hold
of his fingers and began to sign his
name to the decree.
The prime minister, Carlomarde,
seeing what she was doing, put his
hand over hers to stop her. She
stopped long enough to strike him a
blow on the head that, dazed him.
When he recovered himself the doc
ument had been signed and King
Ferdinand was dead.
Calomarde bowed gallantly, and
said to heT in the words of a Span
ish proverb, “A fair hand can do no
wTong.” She replied, “No; but it
can strike, eh?”

More Than Likely to Have Been
the Correct One.
The Smiths’ baby was born on a
Christmas morn, and it was the first
babe of the Smiths, and it was ex
actly a year old on the Christmas
day when a party was held to cele
brate the time. His name was John,
but he was generally called “John
nie” for long, and there was never
such an infant in the wide world.
“He is a thorough genius,” ex
claimed Mrs. Smith. “I’m sure of
it.”
“He will become an inventor,”
said Mr. Smith, “for he is so origi
nal.”
“Maybe an actor,” sighed Mrs.
Smith, “for he is so beautiful.” _
BANKS COUNTY JOURNAL HOHEi, CA,
“Or a musician,” piped in Mr.
Smith, “for his voice reminds me of
Mendelssohn.”
“Or a general in the army,”
guessed Mrs. Smith, “he is so act
ive.”
“Or a great politician,” exclaimed
Mr. Smith, with enthusiasm.
“But whv a politieinn?” queried
the wife in disappointed tones.”
“Because, mv dear,” came the re
ply, “he seems to crawl out of every
thing so easily.”
A TIME SAVER.

An Afternoon at Carnot.
Avery pleasant afternoon was
sj ent By students of Carnot school
on last Friday’ when they all par
ticipated iu an “Faster egg hunt,”
and several athletic exercises which
followed.
First on program after the egg
hunt was “The Bean Bag race.”
Mrs. Irene Coffee spared no pains
in coaching the girls that they
might Be able to defeat the Boys,
while o;i the other hand, “W. G.”
was roasting theboys with all the
snap they could stand.
The race was very close But
while every one was standing on
tip toe breathless, the girls landed
it safe twice in succession.
Next was the “Back race.”
Odis Crump, Herschel Lewallen,
Loyd Poole, Edgar Jackson,
Lafayette I’ool and Hubert Bell
took part.
Well I suppose it was a parallel
to the opening of Oklahoma Ter
ritory in 1889. After the wildest
run ever witnessed in this section,
Hubert Bell made a safe landing,
while Edgar Jackson and Odis
Crump weie close on behind.
Next was a “Foot race” in
which the girls alone took part.
Little Hattie Crump having bor
rowed a little of Odis’s “ball spir
it” led the crowd.
These exercises were witnessed
by a very large crowd.
T 1 e judges were as follows:
Bean bag race: Messrs. D. H.
Payne and E. M. Pool.
Sack race: Messrs. John Crump
and Frank Bell.
Prizes given as follows:
Bean Bag race: Girls.
Back race: Hubert Bell.
Lonnie Bell haying found the
“golden egg” also received a
prize.
Orange Amd Black.
