A well-known London steeplejack
named Larkins has been engaged to
repair the monument to the first
Duke of Sutherland, on the top ol
Ben Vraggle (Sutherlandshire), 1,300
feet above the sea The statue Is 33
feet high and Is on a columa of solid
masonry 00 feet high. It takes the
men two hours to climb to work, and
they have to "down tools” before
dusk to allow of a descent In dajr
light.

Dallas Caudell
Dallas Caudell, whose sentence
ol ten years in the penitentiary
was suspended by Judge Brand on
the condition that he live with his
wife, has left her and gone to parts
unknown. Kiforts are being made
to apprehend him so that the sen
tence of the court, can be put into
effect.

Bird on Chimney Suffocated.
A dead pigeon dropped dewn the
chimney of a Glasgow (Scotland)
house the other day while an aged
woman named Elizabeth Hotchkiss
was seated at the fire side. Thp bird
scattered the ashes of the grate upon
the woman, with the result that she
was severely burned, it is thought
that the pigeon had been •o‘ting on
the chimney head and waa suffocated.

The choir wished to sing a hymn,
the first verse of which ended: “The
night Is falling. Heaven help us as
we’re catling.” But as they wished
It. for morning service, the leader sug
gested that they change the wording
of it a bit. A young man dutifully
proposed the following amendment:
"The morn is dawning. Heaven help
us as we’re yawning.”
