The Horse.
From the* eirhest ago*, thi< noble
nini.il iiai been the friend and
companion of nun. Prized for hi
it-aii y, loved for b'adocility, and
/.due l fir his strength, he has ev
er been regarded as the highest
in value and importance of ail do
mestic animals. In the remotest
ages, as far back a< authentic his
tory discloses anything of the life
and pursuits of man, we find that
the horse occupied a prominent
position in the service of the hu
nan family.
Before the plow and at the liar
row he has multiplied the pro
luction of the earth an hundred
fold beyond what human strength
■ould have secured. Laboring be
fore the loaded wagon, he has tieen
a steady drudge for man. It is not
too much to claim for him that civ
dilations itself would have been
-horn of something of its present
air proportions but for the vat
liable services rendered by this
noble animal. What the horse
may have been in his natural state
is not known, as none at present
•xist in that condition. The
horses which at the present day
are found in a wide state in north
em Asia and America, are known
to lie the descendants of individ
uals formerly domesticated.
The Arabfl, who have been long
renowned for their attachment to
the horse, early showed the extent
to which intelligent training could
develop his finer qualities and
render him the mast docile and
obedient of animals. It is from
the Arabian horse, crossed with
Itarb, that the best stock of Eng
land and America has sprung.
The Arab, above all other races of
man, understands the value of his
horse, crossed with Barb, appre
ciates the nobility of his nature
and treats him accordingly. They
kiss and caress them; they auorn
them with jewels and amulets. In
short, they treat them almost like
rational beings, which arc ready to
sacrifice their lives for their mas
ter’s benefit.
We have all heard the story of
the Arab who refused all offei
made to purchase a beautiful untie
on which he rode, declared he lov
ed the animal better than his own
life. The whole estate of this
poor Arab of the desert consisted
of this most beautiful \oung filly.
When asked if he would sell, and
being pressed by poverty and
want, he hesitated for a long time,
but at length consented on consid
eration of receiving a very large
stun of raonev, which he named
himself. So he was lequestod to
deliver the animal to the Fiench
consul at Said, who soon after
made his appearance mounted on
a magnificent courser, and laid
down the gold demanded for the
mare. The Arab, clothed in rags,
dismounted, looked at the money,
then turning his eyes to the mare,
said: “To whom am I going to
yield thee up! to European, who
will tie thee close*, who will
beat thee, who will render
thee miserable? Return with me,
my beauty, my darling, and he
sprat.g upon her back and sped
away toward the desert. So let us
treat our horses kindly, gently,
tor without them words tail to de
scribe the situation. —Extract from

There is no doubt Joe Brown is
in earnest in his tight against
organized labor. Enough senti
ment might be aroused to encourage
i him to enter the senate race.
; Whatever else may be said it is
plainly seen that Mr. Brown is not
; content to remain on the farm and
he indicates a desire to get back in
the political game. Should he
venture, it is our opinion that he
i will oppose Senator Hoke Smith.—
