1,052 DIE AS LINER SINKS
Vessel Goes Down 10 Min.
After Crash; 22 of Res
cued Die
Quebec, May 2SL—Trapped and
drowned without warning hun
dreds of passengers of theCandian
Pacific liner Empress of Ireland
perished early to-day in the worst
marine disaster that lias ever occur
red in Canadian w aters. The Em
press of Ireland was rammed in a
dense fog by the collier S tors tad.
The litter sank within ten minutes,
earring down with her men, women
aud children who had boarded the
vessel yesteulay at Quebec, to sail
to Europe.
The disaster oecured in the St.
Lawrence River only a few miles
from Father Point, Quebec. The
Stars tail, though badly damaged
herself, stood by to rescue survivors
and was assisted in this task by the
Lady Evelyn and Eureka, which
were rushed to the scene when the
wireless station at Father Point
picked up the “S. O. S,” call of
the rammed liner. The rescured
were taken to Rimouski.
When the Empress of Ireland
sailed she carried, according tore
vised figures of Canadian Pacific,
SISK) passengers and a crew of 377,
a total of 1,31)7 souls. According
to the wireless operator at Father
Point “about 337“ were saved.
Tin*dispatch left 1,0.50 unaccount
ed lor. Of the rescued only 12
were women, and 22 died of injuries
and exposure after being taken to
Kimouski. This left the estimated
death list at 1,052, but there whs
a hope that pilot boats sent out
after the Storstad, Lady Evelyn
Eureka arrived at Kimouski might
pick up more survivors.
The Lady Evelyn reported by
wireless this afternoon that she
hail picked up li bodies at the
spot where the Empress of Ireland
sank.
Following is the account of the
rescues given by .L McWilliams,
the wireless operator at Father
Point, in his dispatch:
“The Empress sank in ten min
utes after the collision with the
collier Ktorstad and immediately
alter she had marconied out the
“save our ship.” Mr, \V hite, the
wireless operator,instantly notified
(lovernment steamers in view and
the Eureka.
“Captain IVlanber was the lirst
to get a wax, his vessel having
steam up when he received wofd
of the disaster. Fhe must have
reached the Krone about 40 minutes
after the disaster.
“The Lady Evelj li had to get
up steam before she could go to the
assistance of the disabled ship.
“When daylight broke, I saw
on the gray horizon, with the aid
of a telescope, a eolier, the two
Covenmenl steamers and nine life
boats, all around the same spot,
and shortly afterward the Eureka
came up with M 2 survivors and sev
oral bodies.
“Later came the Lady Evelyn
with Captain Kondall and more
survivors,and still later came the
! 8 tors tad with a few more bodies.
“All were landed at the Kimouski
wharf, to which point the scene of
actively and interest has now shift
ed. About 337 saved in all.”
The dispatch from McWilliams
contradicted a report received
earlier in the day that theStorstad,
in addition to picking up many
bodies, alone had rescued 3(50 sur
vivors.

Says Public Sentiment
Convicted Frank
Of all the sentimental rot that
has been injected into politics in
Georgia in half a century,
the clamor to get Solicitor Dor
sey into the Gubernatorial race,
eclipses it all. Elect a man
governor because he happened to
be solicitor general when a man
was convicted of a terrible murder.
It is just as reasonable to send
the solicitor general to jail if the
prisoner had been acquited.
Mrs. Grace was not convicted,

neither was Mrs. Applebanm.
Why? Because they were hard
to convict. Anybody could have
convicted Frankt We have law
yers here in Ranks that could have
turned a trick like that with all
the detectives that could possibly
be used and the entire police force
of Atlanta working hard day
and night to get evidence, with
public sentiment backing up ev
ery move and a mob standing
ready to lynch the prisoner if he
escaped conviction.
Get public sentiment against a
man and any lawyer can convict
him, but it takes a giaut to con
vict people like Mrs. Grace and
Mrs. Applehauin where sentiment
is with them.
We need a man for governor

the masses of the people, under

running for governor.
