It Always Helps
says Mrs. Sylvania Woods, of Clifton Mills, Ky., In
writing of her experience with Cardui, the woman’s
tonic. She says further: “Before 1 began to use
Cardui, my back and head would hurt so bad, I
thought the pain would kill me. 1 was hardly able

of Cardui, I began to feel like anew woman. 1 soon
gained 35 pounds, and now, I do all my housework,
as well as run a big water mill.
1 wish every suffering woman would give

Australian "Fighting Parson” Correct
ly Gauged Men to Whom He
Desired to Mlnictrr.
The novel spectacle of preceding
church service with boxing IkhUh
was witnessed recently in Australia.
The pugilistic parson wus the Kev.
If. Linton of St. James, Wifcannia,
N. S. W., and a correspondent gives
the following account of Iho en
counter:
“Mr. Linton struck a (shearing)
shed in full swing, nnd being anx
ious to get into close touch with the
men made inquiries as to the pros
pects of holding a service. An old
hand who was consulted gave it as
his opinion, if he made the attempt
he would probably meet with a
mixed reception. However, nothing
daunted, he Boon made his plan of
campaign, and lost no time in put
ting it into execution.
“He put in an appearance at the
mess one evening, and after u few
fraternal remarks introduced a set
of boxing gloves. This was a bold
frontal attack, and risky. The shed
champion was thunderstruck. He
from the start of shearing freely bad
offered to fight run or jump with
any man in the crowd, with no re
sult, and here was a simple parson
storming his stronghold. Prelimi
naries were soon settled and a willing
go was entered upon, which soon
left the one-time champion deeply
thinking.
“After several other bouts the first
part of the entertainment closed
and the more serious one was entered
upon— a religious service. All hands,
full of admiration for the parson,
rolled up and a hearty exercise was
the result, the first ever held there.
We would not he surprised if he were
elected chaplain to the West Dar
ling shearers.”

TREE BEARS HANDS.
A curious tree is growing in Los
Angeles, Cal., the seed of which was
brought from Mexico. In general ap
pearance it resembles an English
walnut. The leaves are much like
those of a buttonwood, but very
much larger. The most marked pe
culiarity of the tree is its blossoms,
from which it has been named the
“hand tret'.” The flower is an inch
and a half in diameter, with short
russet sepals nnd long reddish-lined
petals. The fat scarlet pistils pro
truded an inch beyond. They are so
joined to resemble a hand, with fin
gernails like the claws of a Chinese
grandee. The resemblance to a hand
is striking.

TAUGHT HIM NEEDED LESSON
Value of Perseverance Impressed on
Spanish Boy In Manner That
Made Right Impression.
Thom is a medieval legend of a
Bpanish boy who was dull at school
and who was so much discouraged
by the severity of his teachers that
lie ran away from home. After he
had wandered a long way he was
tired and sat down to rest on the
margin of a well. As he sat there
his eve fell upon the stone well curb
and he began to wonder how it hap
pened that there was a deep groove
across the stone. He asked an ex
planation of a girl who came to
draw water, and was amazed to learn
that the groove had not been out in
the stone by nun, but had been worn
there by the constant rubbing of the
rope which held the water bucket.
The little circumstance sank deep
into his mind. He argued that if
a soft rope by daily use could force
its way through a hard stone, then
there was nothing that could not tie
accomplished by perseverance, and
he learned his first lesson in the
meaning and value of mental disci
pline. He returned to his father’s
house and to the school from which
lie had fled, and proved the same
truth in his own case, for he not
only passed through the school with
credit, hut became a great teacher
and preacher.
Sorae of us are quicker than oth
ers, hut not always is mere quickness
a sign of superiority. Slow, plodding
perseverance will often outdo quick
ness that is easily discoruaged.

TAKING CARE OF THERMOMETER.
A philanthropic doctor in a min
ing town gave new thermometers to
a number of families, with the ur
gent advice to keep their houses at
a proper temperature. When lie was
making his rounds one day he saw
one of the thermometers hanging up.
He asked the woman of the house if
she remembered his instructions.
“Indeed, sir, I do!” was the response.
“I hang the thing up there, and I
watch it carefully to see it docs not
get too high.” “Hood!” exclaimed
the doctor. “And what, do you do
when the temperature rises above
70 degnv-?” “Why, sir,” answered
the woman, with the air of one faith
ful to a trust, “when it gets too high
I take it down and put it outside
until it cools!’’
THOSE USELESS QUESTIONS
“What are the passengers looking
out of the window for?” asked a
nervous lady passenger on the train

“We ran over a cat, madam,” said
the conductor.
“Was the cat on the track?” she
nest asked.
“Oh, no, ma'am,” assured the con
ductor. "The locomotive chased her
up an alley.”
VERY MUCH SO.
“I wonder if there will be an ice
famine this season?”
“Now wouldn’t that be a queer
business to be a freeze-out?”

CURIOUS BITS
OF HISTORY
OPENING OF THE ERIE
CANAL.
By A. W, MACY.
It was a great day when the
Erie canal was opened tor traf
fic on October 26. 182S. That
v.as two years before the first
railroad was built In this coun
try, and the canal was the most
stupendous public work that had
yet been undertaken. The Idea
was conceived by Gouveneur
Morris In 1800. It was strenu
ously advocated by a few promi
nent men. and as vigorously bp
posed by others. Work was not
begun till July 4, 1817, at which
time ground was broken at
Rome, N. Y. In eight years It
was completed, opening artifi
cial communication for 428
miles an uninterrupted passage
from Lake Erie to tidewater In
the Hudson. The opening wee
celebrated by "a telegraphic dis
charge of cannon, commencing
at Lake Erie, and continued
along the banks of the canal a.d
of the Hudson, announcing to
the city of New York the en
trance on the bosem of the canal
of the firs* barge that was to ar
rive at the commercial empor
ium from the American Mediter
ranean.” Governor Clinton and
other noted public men were on
this barge, and their voyage
down the canal was a triumphal
procession.

FASTING AND OBESITY.
“Would you advise fasting for
one who Is about 40 pounds over
weight?" That depends on the
conditions in the case. An ab
solute fast of mors than five
days is seldom advisable with
out competent supervision. In
any case weight should be re
duced gradually. Aa already ex
plained, while fasting judicious
ly Is beneficial under some cir
cumstances. it is often perma
nently harmful. It la less likely
to be so when one Is over
weight than In cases of under
weight. Fasting can no more be
applied Indiscriminately aa a
cure-all, not even for obeeity,
than can any other remedy.
Obesity is a disease, and a sim
ple diet, with proper exercise
and natural living otherwise,
will bring about normal condi
