Irregulurlty In rare and feeding Is
felt more by sheep than by any other
farm animal A successful aheap man
Maya that he "feeds by the clock."
• • •
With sod-mulch systems, the grass
In the orchard must he mowed often
and allowed to lay where It falls. Itß
removal decreases the fertility of the
soil.

Celery hanked with earUi late In the
fall seems more palatable than where
boards are used. Do not bank when
the foliage 1h at all moist, as this will
aid decay.
• • *
When to apply a fertiliser depends
on when It Is needed by the plant, the
kind of fertilizer, the soil, the crop,
and the season of normal rainfall of
the district
• • •
A poorly fed tree cannot do Its boßt
auy more than a poorly fed man or
animal. It Is surprising what a differ
ence a whoelbarrowful of manure
around n tree will make.
• • •
A good method of watering ferns
It to set the pot in a pan or tub of
water long enough to aoak the roots
and soli thoroughly. Do not water
again until the plant needs It.
...
There are several ways to shorten
the life and usefulness of farm Im
plements. The quickest way to spoil
them Is the one that Is moat common;
leaving them out In the weather.
• • •
In planting fruit trees for family
use. select the varieties that appeal
to the palate of the homo folks, but
for the markets select those varieties

Green ground bones are rich In al
bumen. phosphate of lime and phos
phoric acid, which go to make eggs
and shells. It will pay any poultry
man to buy a botiemlll to grind bones
for his fowls.
• • •
Even If you have not gotten round
to have a little family orchard, you
can t afford to go longer without a bed
of strawberries, and probably some
raspberries, gooseberries, currants
and other small fruits.
• • •
According to the federal forest
service the average annual loss from
forest fires Is about 70 lives and $26.-
000.000. If tile cost of crops, build
ings. stock and young trees were In
cluded the loss would be many mil
lions more.
• • •
Bee keepers should take particular
pains to Inform the fruit growers that
spraying the fruit trees when they are
In full bloom not only poisons many
of the bees, but It Is not the time to
get the codling moth. Better still,
get In touch with the horticultural in
spectors, and ask them to give the
.proper Information about the beat
fcime to spray.
• • •
In trimming young trees from the
nsreery do not leave any branches
that are more than eight Inches long.
The practice of cutjlng back to within
two or three feet on one-year-old trees
Is growing, and usually gives very sat
isfactory results
• * •
By all means put out a strawberry
bed next spring. They an- as sure to
thrive and bear abundantly If proporly
eet out and cared for as a crop of
potatoes. The Senator Dunlap te the
most popular sort and leaves little to

Are you keeping your cows warm
and comfortable?
• • •
It never pays to work a weak horse
beside a strong one.
• • •
During Inclement weather fowls are
better Indoors than out
• • •
Like the housewife, the poultry
man’s work Is never done.
* • ,
There Is a gr<-ater need for variety
of food when fowls are confined

Change the feed of the horse suf
ficiently often to have them relish It.

How about the Ice supply? Are
you going to provide for lee this sea

A pint of keroeeno In a gallon of
whitewash makes an excellent In

Begin to plan for a bettor garden
next year. It should Include fruit,

Poultry and eggs form more than
1C per cent, of all the meat products
produced In this country.
• • •
Keep pregnant ewes on the move.
That Is, make them take exercise—
but don’t do It with a cur.
...
Nasal and throat troubles are often
caused by dusty sleeping quarters.
Bed heavily with clean straw.
• •
A good poultryrnan Is Industrious,
not easily discouraged, filled with
pluck arid grit, and full of ambition.
• * *
Seventeen hens that weigh about
six pounds each ought to have not less
than five pounds of grain every day.
• • *
It Is poor economy to cut down the
hens’ feed because the egg yield la
small.
* * •
Be careful not to feed musty and
fermented food If you want your
horses to go thorough the winter with
profit.
• * •
Always got a written guarantee with
your trees and be sura that the people
behind It are able to make the guar

• • •
Kittle pigs will seldom have the dis
ease of "Ihumps” If you allow the
youngsters plenty of oxerclße and a
largo range.
• • •
It ts the steady galted horse that
covers the greatest number of milaa
In a day and does It with the least
injury to himself.
• • *
To grow wool takes good feed and
regular feeding. A weak place Is
made in the wool every time a sheep
Is Stinted a few days.
• • •
Cow testing demonstrates that a
great many good cows can be kept at
a smaller cost of feed. This Is not
stinginess, but economy.
• • •
The boar wtll worry the sows and
pigs if allowed to run with them at
all times keep him by himself after
the breeding Is completed.
Poultry having access to a sandy
stream of pure water usually keep
thrifty and free from disease. But
look out for polluted streams.

All breeds art. good If used for the
purpose for which they were created
and bred along practical Hues, to sat

From now on you want to be mak

In 100 parts of the yolk of an egg.
52 per cent. Is water. 45 per cent. Is
oil and fat and one per cent, each of
alhu monoids, coloring and mineral
matter.
• • •
Brood sows that raise only twins,
and chicken eating hogs are farm rob
bers to be despised. It Is only a short
haul to market, and that Is where
they both should go.
• • • •
Proper care of the poultry Is very
Important as the weather grows
colder. Every possible thing should
be done for the comfort of the fowls
If winter eggs are to be obtained
...
Year tn and year out the hens need
some grain, some green feed, some
good liquid food, milk If they can get
it, and plenty of grit. Give them that
and you wtll get eggs--provided they
are properly housed.
• •
Never allow any food of any kind to
lie around in the hen house, except
that which Is tn the hoppers or the
green food. Any grain In the litter or
damp mash In the troughs soon be
comes foul and unhealthful.
• • •
By all means build the roost plat
forms a few Inches below the roosts
at the back of the poultry house and
build them high enough from the floor
so that the fowls can work under
them. If they are cleaned every few
days It will do much to keep the hen
house tn good condition.
JifflS CfUNTY fOUVNAL, fIOjIKA.GA.,
Road Building' in Ban Ks.
Editob JoußNAf.:—Many of
our bridges are down and so many
roads in a deplorable condition it
makes it hard to tell where we are
at. Hut to the man who holds up
the bright side of life it is still
hoping for the best, and I believe
under the new tax law we can
have a lin t-class bridge most eve
rywhere it is needed in the county
in twelve months. I hope the
ordinary will look after this as
fast a.s his means will permit.
Injustice to Warden Brown I
want to say be is using all the
economy possible in working the
convicts. Heis working eighteen
men with two salried men besides
warden, while our adjoining conn
ty is working 17 men with six
salried men besides the warden.
Home say that Brown is too
easy on them. I say he is not.
When you work a man all he is
able to stand, t fiat’s enough.
The old lease system was abolish
ed because it was a hell on earth.
I have but little confidence in a
man’s religion, and none for his
chances of a better life hereafter,
who will say they wen- none too
rc ugh under the lease system.
Human nature has fixed it so a
man can do so much and no more.
The church you belong to is
continually singing, “lift up the
fallen,”“Jesus was merciful,’’etc.,
but we know many people who,
judging by their talk, are abso
lutely void of mercy toward t icir
fellowman. Home say that dim
Smith did right in heating the
Me Du Hie county negro to death
and that he should have never
been fined #2500. This same class
of men brought the woman to
Christ and wanted her stoned to
death. W'hat happened at that
meeting that I am proud of was
this: All they had kept covered
up was revealed by Christ and
they went away sorrowful. And
the man who is not willing to give
his fellowman a chance to redeem
himself hits a heart as Black its
hell itself, and there is a day com
ing when they will go away sor
rowful, for the same judge will sit
on their eases at that great day.
I say on the public road is the
place for the convicts, where all
can see how they are treated, and
they do some heavy goading that
you will never l>o able to get done
by free labor, and if you could, it
would o >st #2.00 a day, for one
day you migh • have 50 hands and
the next day three. Free men are
not going to work as the convicts
have to.
One reason why so many people
are opposed to convicts work
ing on the road is because
they cannot work all over the
county at once, and it is true that
some sections have had but verj
little or no benefit from the con
victs. lam sorry of this fact and
hope the authorities will scatter
their work so as to accommodate
alias much as possible.
In justice to Warden Brawn 1
want to say that he has built as
many miles of road as has ver
been built in the county for the
same length of time, since he has
been on our side of the county.
If any man doubts this, come over
and we will compare notes and
see. And 1 want it distinctly un
derstood that l am not paitial to
ward Brown, for 1 think 1 know
several men in the county who
would do as well, but I think
Biown is doing the best be can.
