GRAND JURY PRESENTMEN) S
September Term 1914
We the grand jurors chosen and
qualified at the present term of
court, respectfully submit the fol
lowing recommendations and pre
sentments, to wit.
Through the various committees
appointed from our body, the pub
lie property and records have been
examined and the following reports
made.
ORDINARY
We bare examined the records
and vouchers in the ordinary’s ol'
fice and found them correct, so tar
as we are able to discern.
We also examined the road over
seer’s books for each road district
except for Columbia for which no
overseer is qualified. We recom
mend one be qualified.
The public roads have been
worked in this district under the
old system, to some extent by Mr.
U. 8. Cash.
We find there are some default
ers who have been returned by
overseers to the ordinary.
And we recommend that the
ordinary take proper steps to col
leot taxes or impose fines as the
law diiects.
With the exceptions of this we
find book neatly and correctly
kept.
For ordinary’s report see ex
hibit A.
SHERIFF’S BOOKS
We find the sheriffs books cor
rectly kept with the exception of
the sales record w hich lias hud
several leaves cut ou in two
places.

N. P. AND J. I*. DOCKETS
We the committee appointed to
examine the N. P. and .). P.
Dockets, have examined same and
find them neatly and correctly
kept.
We find the general condition at
the camp as good as could be ex
pected considering the short time
they expect to stay there. The
sanitary condition is splendid.
We find sixteen mules in fairly!
good condition considering the j
heavy work and the hot weather
they have had to undergo. ,
We find 4 wagons, all ol which
are in need of repairs and recom
mend that brakes be put on all
wagons.
We find four wheeleis in good
order also two wheelers in need of
repair.
We find harness for all mules in
fairly good condition one 1 horse
wagon and one dinner wagon in
running order, one buggy and\har

We find by an estimate that it
ha-, cost the county about twenty
four hundred dollars to run the
BANKS COUNTY JOURNAL
jeo iviets since last court including
everything except wear and de
preciation of outfit. We find that
there has been about seventeen
miles of road graded, seven new
bridges built, ten new piers built,
and two piers built higher besides
repairing some old bridges and
some work done in the town ol
Homer.
We find that tin re has been
some over charges made upon the
’county for lumber furnished the
county to wit: Hill and Brown
! have charged the county one dot
lar and a quarter per hundred for
timber cut from their lands tor the
purpose of sawing lumber for the
Jordan bridge. However, they
have returned to the county seven
ty live cents per hundred upon the
above mentioned timber since this
body has been in session, which is
satisfactory to this body. We rec
ommend that the Ordinary fully
investigate all claims presented for
lumber furnished the county.
\Y'e recommend that the Or ti
nary change the methods of pur
chasing supplies lor the camps to
il it; That he purchase at least
ouc months supplies at one time
after having first submitted a fist
of his needed supplies to at least
three dealers in general supplies,
for prices and that he purchase
same from the dealer or firm sub
milting the lowest prices.
YY e reco nmend that the YY arden
keep on file and record on a suit
able book kept for that purpose,
all invoices of supplies and ma
terials purchased for the camp.
YYe recommend that suitable
shelters lx- provided for the mules
at tlie camp.
YY'e further recommend that the
YY'arden prohibit the convicts who
drive the mules, from lashing the
mules with the whip, as they show
>igns of having beer. done. YYe
also recommend that the Ordinary
furnish a sufficient number of hogs
at the camps to corns nine the waste

A Card From Mr. Bradshaw
Maysvile, Ga. 0ct..13, 1914.
Editor —Banks County Journal.
Dear Sir:—Please allow me space
in your columns to correct a state
meat made in your paper of Oc
tober the second in regard to my
ease against W. F. Morris.
First, Morris did not pay all
doctor bills. 1 paid Dr. Lockhart
fifty dollars. Dr. Hardman made
eight visits during the first three
weeks of my illness,! don’t remem
ber him coming and he was not
called in by any member of the
family but 1 had to pay him fifty
dollars, and my wile took money
that l had when 1 was hurt and
paid for part of the medicine that
1 taken, and she bought and paid
for the gauze that the doctors used
in dressing my head. Second,
Morris did not hire a man to nurse
me. Mr. Ed Barber sit up with
me six nights from nine o’clock
unWl three in the morning. My
wife nursed me day and night for
eight weeks and when 1 was at my
worst she went three days and
nights with only one hours sleep
and when I was so delirious she
had to call in Mr. Holbrooks, our
nearest neighbor, to help quiet me,
and she ha l to take our daughter
out of school to help her with the
house work. Third, Morris did
not pay one penny of my expenses,
1 paid it all myself. And I have
the receipts for the doctor bills
1 paid and can show them to any
one who would like to see them.
It ha* been eighteen months since
I was hurt and I have been under
the doctor’s care ever since. I
have been going to Dr. Carlton in
Athens for the last live months,
each visit costing me on the aver
age of four dollars, and Dr. Dead
wyler’s bill has not been paid and
wont be unless I pay it. 1 air.
fifty eight yean of age. At the
time I was hurt my weight was
about one hundred and forty,
while Morris was a man of some
thing over two hundred. He
slipped up on me, hit me in the
hea l with a iron bolt and a man
standing by said: Now you have
killed him, and Morris replied, I
dont give a dam if 1 have. All
that J have got from Morris is the
*IBOO, and after (laying my lawyers
and doctor bills their wasn’t
enough left to pay for the time I
have lost from my work, besides
the suffering and expense 1 have
had. I was never willing for him
to be tried for a misdemeanor, the
crime was a felony. The Judge
telephoned to me that afternoon
to know if I was willing for him to
be tried on a misdemeanor charge.
I phoned back that I wasn’t will
ing for him to be tried lor any
thing but assault and battery and
attempt to murder for that was
his intention when he knocked me
down. Yours truly,
C. L. Bra dsii aw,
Maysville, Ga.

Did you ever give auy thought
to the expense of a newspaper’s!
While the paper is small it costs
about one hundre 1 dollars a month
to print this newspaper, and the
small amount you owe would not
help much. But you must re
member that over one thousand
people also owe small amounts.
Suppose they would all come in
and pay in a week; wouldn’t it
it help us somi T We are on the
ground floor. No elevator.
Come in and pay us some, if you
can’t pay all.
It would cost about $30.00 to
send statements to all who owe
the .Journal, so we have decided to
scud out a statement in this way.
It is much cheaper. If you owe
this paper anything please call in
and settle it ot by check or
money order. Don’t throw this
statement a vay but cut it out and
put it i . your vest pocket and af
ter you nave family prayers read
it over to your family. Then put
it in your pocket book and keep it
until you have paid the small bill
you owe us. We need the money
The amount is small, and you can
pty it. Will you!
