•! I Pjrtp’r t=.~- - . .. . • - •. - THU I SUAV. NOVEMBER 1 i. I8M. ——— EDITORIAL NOTES —Wuhonc has swallowed Virginia— (but is lo say r.he lteadjuricrs and Ke- pnblieans have carried the Slate. —The Democrats carried the New York Legislature, and the entire State tickets in Mississippi and Maryland. —-OHtteau’s tri.il has begun, and he anntuttces himself ready. 11 is coun sel will put up a pretty strong pica of insanity, and we shouldn’t be surprised if It didn’t stick. —Tile people are not crowding to the Atlanta Exp isition at alt. 'things now look as ii Use concetti will come out largely in the suds. It is a b'g show Ilntugh and everybody ought to see it. — Copt. R. G. Fleming, the new Superintendent of the Savannah, Flor ida & Western Railway, is a gentle man who would d<> honor to any posi tion. We congratulate the road in se curing his services. . —Rid Astor, the New York million- air and a Radical nontiriee, was beaten for Congress last week in a lL publie-in district. Billy tried to buy his way in, and used $80,000 in the canvass, but the people soured on him. and elected his Democratic competitor by a large majority. — Next, week the Atlanta Exposition will devote a ‘ day” to Gen. Sherman, who will be present to receive the bon ers. Well, everyone to their own notion, hut we opine that very few Southerners will take any stock in the honors to the modern Attilla. They arc not yet loyal enough for that vil ainnus dose, and we trust in they may never be. —Loudoun county, Virginia, at least did dot go for Mahone’s scullions. We afe~ proud of old Loudoun, and would like to shake the honest paw of out- friend "Tod” Bulvn. We know that he is cussing a bloc streak on the gen eral result but the count in Loudoun prevents him fruui leaving the Slate. —A writer in the Atlacta Post, in view of the fact that the Exposition management have set apart a day to do honor General Sherman, suggests that they give Jeff. Davis a “day” also. We hope r.ot—the people of the South, and the lovers of the true and the good the world over, honor Mr. Jefferson Davis every day in the three hundred and pixty-gve. Besides it is nothing less than prof - notion to mention his honored name in the same connection with Sher man's. — From an article to the Albany Ad j V< rti.ser of the loth on Bainbridge and the Judgeship,’’ without signature, We learn that the de'ogatbm that wuut frou Arlbany to Atlanta to look alter the sue ccssor to Judge Fleming were not unw ed upon Judge Warren by any means, tfbd that the latter gentleman had even been appointed before the delegation arrived, this showing that Gov. Colquitt only consulted hiniseif in the the ap pointment. Of course the Governor’s reasons were satisfactory *o himself, no nutter how his action wav appear to i others. We thank our contemporary tor print, ing Tub Dkaiochat’s article in a con spicuous place in its columns. The ease was plainly stated therein, and the Advertiser’s readers can judge it for ihemsclvcs. Oar article was hardly ?. “wail,” but only a reminder of thevo** racious action of some persons, who seemed to take advantage of very sad and sorrowful circumstances to further their own interests. The times arc sadly <>u:. of joint, however, and we are surprised at nothing. COTTON STATEMENT. The Financial Chronicle says editori ally that the cotton shipped to market directly overland between September 1 and November 1, 1881, is set at 123,- 033 bales, against 92.268 bales last year. Southern consumption 45,000 'bales, against 35.000 bales last year. Taken by Northern spinners 344.489 bales, against 291,914 bales last year, and that the eotton in sight, is 1.609.914 last year. The weight of bales averages 484.5 pounds, against490.6 last year. The price of cotton on the 31st of October, 1881, was 13 3-1G cents, against 11 e-ute year. Print cloths were 4 cents, last year 4J cents; standard sbeetir.g now 8$ cents and last year they were 8 cents. The receipts last week from the plan tations wue 253,573 hales, againgt 276,857 bales last year. The Chronicle says that the indica tions are that the yield of the present crop, cveu &t Lie reduced estimates now c irrent, will be sufficient for the wants of the spinners of the world, and this causes a depressed market. 35 feet. 3-000 sticks 40 to 4*5 feet and average 43 feet. 2,000 sticks 46 to 50 feet and average 47 feet.
