A correspondent writing to the -At
lanta Constitution from Thomasviile
says the stockholders of the Chattanoo
ga, Columbus and Florida railroad held
of the company to have the route sur- ! their regular annual meeting in that
veyed and work commenced at the ear
liest pracieabic moment. The fact that
II. S. Haines is; the President shows
conclusively that Li: iness is meant. He
is too prominent a r ulr-a 1 man to have
his name connect' d m any way with
“wild cat’’ enterprises; and besides our
opinion is that this new line is a part
of that grand system of railroads now
being inaugurated by the Savannah,
Florida and Western of which he is
the General Manager. That this sys
tem will do more for the development
of South Georgia and Florida than any
Other no one will deny, and that Maj.
Haines will bend a!! of his great oneigy
and splendid ability to carry it out lo
its fallc-t fruition all must admit.
We visited Jacksonville on this oc
casion and took our first'ride over the
now famous Waycross Short Liue—tbe
now link of the S. F. & W. R’y run
ning to Jacksonville—and we must
say that it is perhaps the finest piece of
road in the South. The rails aro of
ateel and tho track is as smooth as hu
man ingenuity can make it. The dis
tance from Savannah to Jacksonville
over this lino is, wo believe, 150 miles
and the fast mail aud passenger trains
accomplish it in six hours and a half
including stoppages. These fast trains
arc said to be a matter of sincere pride
to Maj. Haines, aud well they may be.
The engiues and cars used are the
finest made, and. the thousands of

Col. W. H. Craword and Capt. Oscar

elected S. G. McLendon, President,
and the IIou. William M. Turn in,
Secretary and Treasurer. This is one
of the most important lines of road to
be built iu the Socib. It is practically
a continuation of the Cincinnati South
ern to the gulf via Rome, Columbus,
Cuthbert, Bainbridgo and Tallahassee
and Gainesville, Florida, varying only
nineteen miles from an air-line to the
gulf. This line of railroad will open
up the finest farming, timber and tur
pentine regions in Georgia and Florida,
uuu when completed will, iu the nature
of things, be a most important liue,
connecting Florida with the great
northwest, and offering'the shortest
route for passengers and freight. About
58 miles of this road is now graded, and
right of way procured from Baiabridge
to Columbus.
