^ le democrat,
°® r County Paper ?2 a Tear
There is 10 much wealth in the
United S- *tas Senate that Legig-
tion in that boby should 1*
honest. The Benhte consists of
76 membsn, whose aggregate
wealth is said to ha $180,000,000,
making it, perhaps, the richest
deliberatiT© in the world,
lour Senators jtre comparatively
poor, but all the rest have large
fortunes. The historian of the
i imes Democrat's Everglades ex
pedition sums up hi« observations
of the everglades as fallows : “It
is a vnet marsh, interspersed with
thousands of island* gmall in ex
tent, and with few exceptionB
completely inundated, even at the
i ima we explored tlie*i which wai*l
during a very dry season. On the
islands that were out of water
there was but a few inches of soil
covering the rosks. In my opin
ion their drainage is utterly im-
practieablo, and even if it were
praolicaLIe the reward for such an
undertaking would be lands that
could be. uiililized for no other
purpose than g* a grazing ground
for stack. They are nothing more
nor less than a vast and useless
marsh, and sach they will remain
far all time to come, in all proba
bility. Terrell comity farmers
are meeting with little trouble in
getting all the labor they want.
Evidently they are not cursed with
turpentine* farms. Work has
been temporarily suspended on
the Thomasville Pinny Woods
Hotel, for lack of funds. The
Culhbert Enterprise reports the
following unusual occurrence:
“Not long since soma person in
vaded the Baptist house of worship
in this city, moved the old Bible
from its plstce and in its stead put
u }*Miiitifu! new Book, with an
eiegsat pulpit cushion for it to lie
upon. No clue has yet been found
to the perpetrator of the
deed Judge Bovver has granted
an injunction restraining the tax
cellocter ef Dougherty county
from collecting the special tax
levied by the county commission
ers, to pay lor Tift’s bridge. The
cure will be carried to th« Supreme
Court, Wyatt Oliver, color
ed, was shot and killed by Jared
Hogant, colored, on Henry Can-
nan's place near Camilla on the
29th ult, and escaped. Camilla
Clarion: Frank Singleton, a
colored man on Mr. E. T. Walkers
place, was found dead in his bed
on Saturday morning, 5th inat.
Hia wife awoke only in time to
witness his last struggle.
Camilla’s building boon* c-oiitiu-
ues, notwithstanding the hard
times. Near Eatoaton last
summer, Jshn Malone, in a picnic
difficulty, shot Albert liedd,
giving him a serious wound. Ever
since Redd has threatened ven
geance not only against his assail
ant, but against all hia relation
ship. They were in deadly fear of
him, and kept close after dark in
order to avoid meeting him. Sev
eral nights ago Y> lias Malone,
who resides in a different part of
the county, was attracted by cries
of anguish near midnight and
going out he received, a full charge
of buck-shot, liis assailant ex
claimed : I’ll show you how John
shot at me." The wounded man
died next day, and a warrant was
issue-d for the arrest of Redd.
Eastman Times: A shocking and
most horrible tragedy, in which
man and wile were tne principle
actors, culminated in this county
on Christmas day last, when the
wife was mercicilessly shot to
death—Willis Hodges, colored,
employed at the turpentine still
of A. Reacock & Co., near Chauu-
cey, grew augy with his wife, or
paramour, and after a few heated
words he drew his pistrol and
fired ai her, the ball entering the
left hip and ranging downward
fhrough the bowels. The woman
lived but a few days and died.
The man came to Eastman, it is
said, and loitered around here
until he heard of the woman's
death, when he skipped the
country.
A Walton county widow has
sst a terriable example that
should be waraing to young men
who presume tco much upon the
magic influence of thair good looks
and who offer to lake liberties
with female* without solicits* ion
or encouragement. The yeur.g
man is question, who only put his
arms around the waist of a lady,
was not satisfied,- by being re
pulsed several times by slaps in
the lues, but persisted in his im-
gentlemanly assault, until she
convinced him, that his embraces
were unappreciated, and that she
meant to defend her virtue, by
seizing her trusty rifle and blow
ing the top of his head off. This
is one the dearest hugs on record.
But it Las a moral. That- is young
man be satisfied with a slap*-
Young woman defend your honor,
and if neccessary resort to the
rifle The bachelor editor of the
Constitution, develops the tact
that Georgia is secned only to
Texas in point of fecundity-
There are born inside her borders
every year {18,920 babies, and
average of 7 every hour night and
day the year through. He further
develops the fact that Georgia
has more centennariacs than any
other state in the Union. This
speaks well for the grand old com-
monwealth, and something for
which ehe might feel proud. New
if the bachelor editor, of the Con
stitution, can devise some means
-fr’y which immigration from her
territory could be stepped, she
will soon be made independent
by ?. national population. “Go
f&via,”in the Barnesvilie (Geor
gia) Gazette, gives her female
readers this remedy for mite:
Take sa^afras oil. one drachm—a
teaspooaful—sweet oil or cotton
seed oil—four ounces ^mix the
sassafras oil with the latter inti
mately, from five to ten drops
rubbed on the head, under the
neck, wings add down the back

the mitee in a short while. It will

struck the pavement. I* fact, if
you thought of spitting a piece of
ice would roll out ofyoar mouth/'

The Banner Watchman reports
that more negroes than usual are
hunting homes this year, owing to
the hardness of the weather-
The ElbeGon New South ssvs:
“On Christmas day three old gen
tlemen, one a Methodist, another
a Baptist and the other a Presby
terian, all met at the little town of
Bowman, on the Elbert cn Air-
Line railroad, and being old
friends,, repeatedly joined in a
social glass until the spirits so
animated them Hint one of them
suggested that they should all de
some!Ling to enjoy Chrstmaas, in
which all three readily eencarred,
provided they did not transcend
or violate the discipline of the
various churches. The Baptist
said that there was nothing in the
discipline of his church that pro
hibited singing, the Methodist said
that he knew nothing in the dis
cipline cf his that prohibited “pat
ting,'’ and the Presbyterian said
that his church had legalized
dancing, and so ’ the Baptist com
menced singing, the Methodist
patting and the Presbyterian
dancing, and thus enjoyed
themselves in the streets for an
hour or more, when they mutually
agreed to. suspend, in order to join
in another glass and sweet repose
in the arms of morpheus.
Banner-^Watchman: A whole
sale liquor drumsaer tells us that
the temperance move is seriously
injuring his business, and he does
not now visit what were once his
best counties, in the prohibition
belt the drug - stores hay a good
deal of liquor, but it is sold other
wise smuggled in, but it is net a

dets and is not worth looking af-
